Maggie’s Man's Best Friend Thread

My 18.5 year old male Terrier mix, Casey was killed and taken away by an Owl around 4:45 AM on Saturday, 27 February. I am crushed, broken, and really struggling with the loss. I know I'll be OK in the long run, but for now my heart is aching terribly.

Folks can tell from my previous posts that I really love dogs. At this point I'll have to wait until the loss of Casey doesn't feel so raw, then I really hope to get another dog. I would prefer a senior dog that is 4-7 years old because I'm not so young myself and I wouldn't want the dog to be having to find a new home if my life ended before the dog's time was up. I would look for something that is a little too large for me to have to worry about owls, hawks, or eagles attacking the dog. I like little dogs, but after loosing 9.5 pound Casey, wisdom tells me that I should look for something a little bigger that hopefully is more raptor proof. I don't need anything like a Newfoundland, Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, etc, but something bigger than 15 pounds....

I'll eventually be OK, I'm not a hurt myself kinda guy, I know I still have more work to do on this earth. So for now, it is "Suck it up Buttercup, no one ever said life was easy or fair, get on with living."

Newest critter just hit eight months old. You’d never guess it but he loves to herd all my ducks and goats no issue, he bit one guinea fowl when it wouldn’t fly back to it’s fence but immediately let it go. Wish I knew how to harness that instinct in him better.

Find a good herding trainer. Mals are natural herders and generally very smart, well most of them anyway. Mine, not so much 🤪

9 weeks newest addition. Had to put my black lab down last Friday. Drove 6 hours on Sunday to get this one. Only time I’ve been without a dog is the 10 years I spent stationed overseas.

This is my old handsome guy. His name is Toni, short for Rigatoni. Adopted him in 2006 at a year old which makes him 16! He suffers from disk dysplasia so he's not as mobile as he use to be, but sure seems happy still. He is the first dog thats ever been 100% mine, and it feels 100% shitty to watch him wither away. Everyone always has positive words of encouragement and says i gave him the best life possible, but none of that stops the reality of the situation from hurting like hell.

Sorry to be a drag, but this awesome thread of wonderful puppers really got me stirred up inside.

Mans best friend indeed!!!

Look like a great partner. Dogs make some of the best people.

I have to tell you, worse thing I ever had to do, second I swear mine knew what was going on that day. She was stronger than any of us and took her last breath looking straight at me as we held her. I feel for you and your best bud. Gonna be tough.

My biggest challenge is the damn disk dysplasia. He's happy and healthy as a 16yo dog can be but his damn back end just doesn't work. We have a doggie wheel chair which is pretty helpful for getting out and about, but around the house is tough.

I credit his sister for keeping him young for the latter part of his life. She's an energetic little American staffy that looks, sounds and acts like a pot belly pig. Of course we had to name her pig since it was only fitting.

It will be one year next month we put Miss Nova down.
The wife ordered these coffee cups. They are great! They look like Nova with the wings and Shelia who we adopted Sept 2020.

They are really nice and helps with the pain.

Everyday is one day closer that you get to see them again. Hang in there dude, it does get better.

I'll play..Here's my pound mutts. I used to do a lot of volunteering/fostering and training at the local animal shelters, and ended up with these two permanently.

The brown dog, Brie, is about 10 years old and the tan and white dog, Pete, is about 3-4 years old.

Brie was my tester and teacher dog for fosters, as she can basically get along with any dog. She is great at bringing some of the rougher dogs out of their shells and has an emotional intelligence thats quite amazing.

Pete basically won the lottery and got picked up in a notorious dog fighting area. Hes an absolute nut. He was on death row with heartworms and other issues, but I was able to take him home with me. He ended up being quite the hand full and I didn't want him being with an unexperienced owner, so I kept him. After over a year of. "What did I get myself into", he turned out to be one of my favorite, smartest and most loyal dogs.

They both run 2-4 miles a day and Brie is still in good enough shape to give Pete a run for his money, atleast for a short sprint. But Pete is an athlete through and through. Has a 6ft vertical, catches rabits on the run and squirels off the tops of fences. Loves finding rats and any other varmit work. They are pretty much inseparable at this point. Ying and yang.

My daughter has one of his relatives (8 month female husky) and I have at least a dozen holes in my backyard right now that I could fall through straight to China. They will never stop digging.
