So I am bored and I have a Mauser 98 action, I trued it, lapped the lugs, welded on a new bolt handle, drilled & taped it, mounted a Ken Ferrel steel mount, tapered the extractor for snap over and added a adjustable side safety trigger, the parkerized it.

thinking of a 6.5x55 f34 barrel tapper in 24 inch hunter with a boyds FWT stock?

Re: Mauser Action and what to build

I turned one into .458 and really enjoy the beast. Hornandy 500gr fmjs are cheap and they can be accurately placed on game, even when they are behind small trees. i have been wanting to build one in 308 with a rear aperture and front globe. It would be fun to use the stripper clips and shoot steel at distance.

Re: Mauser Action and what to build

I built an alloy rail for a 98 action I had laying around and it is starting to shape up like a real sniper rifle considering it is 100 years old . How many 100 year old cars can keep up with a modern car ? Mauser was a genius.

Re: Mauser Action and what to build

I think a .284 would be a really neat project on an action like that. If I am not mistaken the mag box on an M98 is about 3.3 inches long which would package the cartridge nicely with the heavy 7mm bullets seated far out for optimal case capacity.

Re: Mauser Action and what to build

Very nice!

I like the checkering on the bolt release.

I've just been boring - 30-06, 7x57.

My next build is a .308/7.62 NATO - I have an Israeli barrel that I plan on putting with a Russian Capture receiver.

Re: Mauser Action and what to build

Both my step daughter and grand daughte want me to build them hunting rifles.

I'm going the Mauser route, one would be a 6.5X55 and the other will be a 270 Win.

Figured they would use light bullets for deer and antelope (keeping recoil down) and yet can go to heavier bullets for elk.

Contrary to what my Step Daughter wants, neigher will be PINK.

Re: Mauser Action and what to build

Nice work man! Looks very nice- I am major lover of the 6.5 Swede, got a bunch of them. Had a really trashy one I did up in .257 Roberts for something a little different and still classic.
Can't wait to see how it shoots for you, share load data when you do.

Re: Mauser Action and what to build

Thanks

I have a deal for you mauser nuts like me

this steel Ken Ferrell mount is to high for this hunting rifle, I need a Mauser 98 standard 0 MOA leupold 1 piece mount with medium rings, they are not expensive, my mount runs around $100
my mount http://www.kenfarrell.com/scan/st=db/co=...ount/op=eq.html

I will trade

Re: Mauser Action and what to build

I noticed that there are some "dots" on your stock....Shock bolts? I did'nt notice any in the picture of the bedding...I am in the process of restocking a '09 Arg in .270 now and I am at the bedding stage and looking for the correct way to bed a mauser, Thats why I am restocking it....Former owner apparently didn't do it right and cracked up a AAA walnut with 300$ of checkering on it...Mine has a Canjar trigger with a tang safety. The rear tang is sort of comped because of the saftey link...Sure would like details on your bed job, looks slick....thanks

Re: Mauser Action and what to build

Boyds stock has that just for looks, the dots are fake recoil lugs, My bedding is Devcon steel bed, no need for recoil lugs with this cartridge, only magnum.
I do how ever use the steel or aluminum Ferrel on the back bolt to keep from compressing the wood when tightening the back tang screw.I just drill out the hole in the stock and make the Ferrel fit. And of course the barrel is free float.
bed the entire receiver area you can bed the first 2 inches of the barrel if you want, I only do this with very heavy barrels, but not on sporters
