Wind was not very nice today, but hey, if you can't shoot in the wind you can't shoot around here.
I had to shoot today because the rest of the month I'm booked up with appleseed, women on target, and range work days.
Did not shoot the gong. I want a 2.5" peice of steel Just can't bring my self to shoot at paper fascimle.
The 3 3/8" peice I used last month was to easy once I used enough rubber belting on it to settle it in a breath cycle.

Will be putting my Marlin through its paces at the 100 and 200 yard targets Tuesday and Wednesday. Might have up to four entries in two days, haha. And it's only the beginning of the month. Good shooting Smallbore and Clod. I have a feeling I will be all over the place at 200. I may even have to post a target above the one I'll be scoring for aiming purposes, might not have enough adjustment left in the scope.

No pic on this one, threw it in the trash too quick. Prone with bipod. Didn't have a spotting scope, so I walked after every ten shots. My first five looked to all be in the ten ring. But I noticed when I went to look at the target, that in the ten shots I took, they were gradually moving up and to the right. I thought that was kinda weird. My 13th shot didn't hit paper... I looked at my scope in disgust, and noticed that my scope rings had moved 3/8" forward on the base... $^#@%!!! Resighted hastily, and finished off the round. My last five to ten shots completely sucked because I was pissed, and I could have done better had I retained some sense of sanity.

Re: MAY 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Hey guys, I just got some software, lets you make your own targets and set them to print tiled. I can scan up a full sized 200 yard A21 Target, or any other target larger than a page, and we can have some better copies to use. Just let me know and I'll get on printing them.

Re: MAY 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

just a note on the tiled printing.

from my other hobby(RC)i have software for tiling targets too. its very simple to use and works great for printing large objects on regular printer paper.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.reap/ProgramsandDocs.html

on that page there will be two groups of programs available to download. the one your looking for is Tile Print. its in the top group towards the right. download and install it and then you just open your file in the program. then when the picture shows up on the page click and drag from one end of the image to the other. then go to the small box in on the top "toolbar" and input the length. if your target diameter is 10in. you just type in 10 and print.

it will leave a smallborder around the edge of the paper because most printers cant print all the way to the edge. to put your pieces together you can either leave them on and eyeball it or cut of the edges. i usually just cut of the right side and the bottom of every one so i can overlap them and get rid of the white lines that would be there if you just taped it on without cutting the edges off.

it works on all sorts of stuff to. i make those soldier silhouettes where they have the soldier kneeling holding his rifle next to a cross and it works great for that too. if you wanted to make a target bigger for longer range you can just enlarge the number and it will still stay proportional. pretty cool little free program.

Ok I set out today to shoot this comp and upon getting to the shooting site I was greeted with lots of wind. I shot this anyway. I screwed myself by first setting the target stand in a dip in the field where the target was about a foot above a hill and with it being 70* and sunny I had to try and shoot through the mirage with wind from 5-15MPH. I was dialed down to 10X on the scope to lessen the mirage which helped some, but I was clueless as to where I was hitting. I didn't bother with a spotter and fired the whole 25 then looked. I did pretty good waiting for the wind to settle some before letting the round go but my target reflect some that I didn't read the wind well on. I definitely missed using my Red Tac rear bag for shooting this but for first time w/o rear bag I felt I did good working with all the conditions.

I had a good time doing this and hope to continue in the future.

Re: MAY 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

I have a really crappy announcement to make. This may be TMI but oh well. I have a siezure condition that requires me to take a medication every 4 hours. Unfortunately my tolerance has gotten to be too high to continue the med I'm on now. The one that I have to switch to makes your hands shake. I have been on it before and that's why I chose not to stick with it. But at this time, I really don't have any other option. Everybody has what's good for them and what's bad for them. So shooting is still a ton of fun to me, but my bar does have to be lowered. Expect my scores to be much worse from now on than I usually do. I will probably just be shooting the 2.5" gong match. If I do shoot for points, expect my scores to be in the low to mid 140's with a single digit X score. It would be nice if this was all fake and I was just letting Carter win (haha!), but it's not. However, this will not stop me from bringing the noise!

Re: MAY 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Sorry to hear about that SBS. Hopefully the shakes won't be as bad this time around. I was gonna pick up the Savage TR in 17 to give ya some competition after I get this move done with. Best of luck and good shooting to all competitors. I'm still hoping to get out this month and shoot but this moving crap has been killing me.

Re: MAY 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Small Bore, I hate to hear news like that. I wish you the best of health in the future. Issues like that and detached retina can be tough for a shooter to handle.

The ironic thing is that I just put money down on an Aschutz 1517 17HMR. I have always speculated that the 17 HMR is better accuracy at 100 yards than a 22LR. I have a Marlin, but I wanted to use a more precise weapon and start sorting ammo to push rimfire to its bleeding edge. I am pushing for the elusive 25X at 100 yards.

Range Report/Notes:
Overcast 60 – 70 degrees, light wind, 0-5.
It was a perfect day for shooting, mild temps, flat light, low/no wind.
I shot the targets reversed to better see the hits.
The higher end ammo really makes a difference at the longer range; my January target was about the same left to right, but the vertical dispersion was about double.

Re: MAY 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

I would like to post a photo, however technology is kicking my butt. - Solved...

I looked back, it is not a record when comparing the score as a percent to the 30 round matches.
Conditions were ideal, and I think I had a very consistent box of Eley. I have been working on better NPA and calling/logging shots. I also shot a practice target first with a lesser grade ammo, and also had a couple of "gusts" of wind, maybe 5 mph. That target would have only scored a 234.05x

I shot the 17 first... it was the highest score I have ever gotten, so I was going to proclaim my Annie the most accurate rimfire ever. Then I scored higher with my 40X the next day.

To be sure there was ZERO wind when I shot my 22LR score. The 17 did see some wind and was absolutely unaffected. I hope to get the chance to take my 17 to 200!

More later and pics to follow...

Well... I helped let the cat out of the bag on Eley. I said I wanted a higher level of competition and we are getting it. Excellent shooting!

One of the things that I did different this round was I started using the Harris bipod again. I have been using an Atlas... it is very nice, but I think that the panning capability of the Atlas also makes it less rigid... In other words, it is better for tactical and hunting work, but not as good for target work where you can take the time to get set up just right and are shooting at a stationary target at a known distance.

Thanks to all that participated this month, and your input in the learnings thread. Looking at the different styles of rifles and ammos being used both in the long range and short range matches and the tips and tricks shared, it's turning out to be a good source of information. Thanks to JOE MARTIN for starting it last year.

Again CARTER MAYFIELD is the rimfire champ at 100 yards with 250 - 22x, and a step closer to that elusive perfect score. Amazing!

At 200 yards, EL KABONG took the honors with 245 - 8x, very fine shooting at that distance!

<span style="color: #FF0000">BOTH SCORES ARE RECORD </span><span style="color: #FFFFFF">HIGHS FROM EITHER </span><span style="color: #3366FF">THE BENCH OR PRONE</span>...<span style="font-weight: bold">CONGRATULATIONS!</span>

And a shout out to CLOD HOPPER scoring a 222 - 3X at 100 yards with aperature sights and prone position.

SMALLBORE SNIPER has a bit of a health issue going on, we hope all becomes well with that. A big welcome to a few new shooters to the matches - FAT KID, JR V, and RTHUR. It seems most decided to go prone this month and scores were generally higher. Thanks to TRAVIS MIHM and DEEPEASTKILLA for offering some tech assist on getting better free printable targets, will have to PM you guys on getting that together. A little late for June, but most likely doable for July.

The "gong - round disc" comps can be shot by putting the appropriate sized gong (a cut out or nicely drawn circle) on your regular targets - or a regular metal gong behind your target - essentially shooting an extra match while shooting the "regular" target, if you choose to do so.

Re: MAY 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

My pics are up... flipping the target to see the holes is a brilliant idea. I am trying it on next outing. I am tired of having to walk up to the target to see my score.

I am very interested to see what my Annie does at 200. I am going to need to dedicate myself to 200 this go round.

Re: MAY 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Wow guys great shooting and a big welcome to the new shooters. Sorry I didn't get a chance to shoot this month but the "move from hell " is over and I'll be all over the June comp.

Re: MAY 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITIONS

Was a good time for me shooting this. I think I might be able to shoot 100Y and maybe can get out to 200Y this weekend. This time I will make sure to set target so I don't have to fight the mirage off the ground. Lots of hills in the clearing where I shoot to deal with when setting targets, but I want to get out to 200Y and see what the rifle can do.
