Gents,
I just received a new build that has a barrel that has been Melonited. Before I take it to the range, do any of you have a recommended method of cleaning before shooting this rifle? A friend of mine suggested JB Bore paste. Any thoughts???

Re: Melonite Barrel cleaning

Clean patch?

Hoppes and clean patches?

Shoot often.

I wouldn't use any "compound," abrasive, or harsh chemicals, just shoot it, clean it, repeat.

My nitrided POF barrel just needed a little shooting and Hoppes.

Re: Melonite Barrel cleaning

I just got two builds back from melonite recently and they took about an hour for each barrel to get the residual salt, etc out of the barrels ... I had 4 barrels to do. I used Hoppes and the foaming bore cleaner mainly but also ran some Sweets and Kroil patches as well. Lots of patches.

Re: Melonite Barrel cleaning

I did the Kroil and Hoppes on my AAC 300 Blk when I got it. Reddish brown crap kept coming out for a long time as I did it. I started thinking it was rust.

Re: Melonite Barrel cleaning

Who have y'all used to do the melonite?

I ask because I'm intending to send mine off to H&M, and they claim they'll clean it spotless after treatment.

Re: Melonite Barrel cleaning

Thanks fella's. I wasn't too keen on the bore paste idea. But I have plenty of Bore tech, patches, and Kroil if need be.

Re: Melonite Barrel cleaning

Once Melonited it's just about impossible to hurt the bore by cleaning. If you had the QPQ process done there is kind of a fuzz that's left in the bore and chamber. That's the rusty looking stuff you see when cleaning. All that needs to be removed. Get as aggresive as you want you can't hurt it.

Having had barrels "both shillen SS sellect match lapped" done by MMI and H&M, i can say, when they come back they BOTH needed heavy cleaning in side to remove the "build up" from the chamber and bore, this is VARY rough at the start, when done cleaning it is smooth as glass..

Why does this need done?
The finish you see on the outside looks the way it does due to the company "polishing" the finish after it is done, this is done with glass beads at 40psi to remove the oxidation from the process, while this should not effect the inside of the bore, no company would take the chance that it "might' and ruin a good barrel

Post-processing - It is important to thoroughly clean your barrel again before you resume shooting. I suggest using a mild abrasive such as Flitz, Iosso, or JB Bore Paste on a tight fitted patch. Lap the bore and scrub out the chamber good. Don't expect your old load to shoot the same. My experiences have shown me that a new load development will be in order.</div></div>

It took me about 45 min per barrel.

Start by running a WET patch in the bore when u get it back...
let it soak for 5 min

"I wouldn't use a good brush it might get trashed" wet the brush push this down the bore this will be stiff as hell for the 1st 5 pass's
you will need to do at least 30 stokes, after the 1st 10, it should have you normal resistance

Run some more wet patchs, they will look like mud when that come out

If you have JB bore paste, this is when you break that out for 20 strokes.. if no JB, us can use flitz or other polish on a patch

Now some more wet patchs to clean that out, they should be black but should feel as smooth or smoother then when you sent the gun in.

Now the chamber.. either use a chamber brush, or over sized brush, IE: 45acp brush for a 308 or 10mm brush for a 223 chamber.
shrub the hell out of it, personnelly i chuck the rod in a cordless drill and buzz it for a few seconds..

Wipe out the chamber and you are done.

dont use "good" new brushes, since this will TRASH the brush... or have some spares...

Re: Melonite Barrel cleaning

Interesting, have been considering having a barrel done but did not realize the scope of clean up. Have to get some supplies lined up if I do this.

Re: Melonite Barrel cleaning

Yep lots of patches required. Get a good nylon brush because you'll kill several bronze brushes if not. I also used brake clean to flush out the loose stuff after each brushing. I stopped after 45 mins and just shot it and it was all good.

I also had a borescope handy at the time and could see the debris was very stubborn to remove..

Re: Melonite Barrel cleaning

I haven't yet had to clean up a part coming back from ferritic nitrocarburizing, but I have had to clean up a lot of 300M that was heat treated in a salt bath.

The salts used for the bath for 300M are water-soluble, and are MOST easily cleaned with hot water.

What solvents seem to work best for the melonite? Water?

Ring: sounds like you have no fears about doing actions?!

I'm trying to do my due diligence in determining if I can do my FN SPR action. I plan to ping the recoil lug with a hardness tester on the "A" and "C" scale....if its harder than ~42, I wasn't going to do it.

What was your basis for deciding it was ok for yours? I called FN and they REALLY plead the 5th.

DONT do the FN chrome lined barrel...

the action is good to go.. i saw RACKS of custom BAT actions getting done when i was there in the summer.. dont worrie about the lug.

so far, i have done 6 barrels, and 4 or 5 barreled actions... no issues..

as for cleaning, read my review from a few months ago..

The dude I spoke to a few months ago mentioned everything had to be dis-assembled..side bolt release and all. So are they able to treat the BA without removing barrel now? It will def save some time and possible headache.

Re: Melonite Barrel cleaning

this is how mine went in...

barrel and action... nothing more... if you have a side bolt release, it needs removed due to the spring will get cooked... same for your bolt... remove ANY parts that have springs...
