Just got my glass in today and it says that the retical is setup at 15x fo its SFP. Does that mean that is the power i can range targets at because its a MIL reticle...why would they do that and not have it range at full power? Any help would be cool. Great scope just dont understand why lol.

Thanks for the reply. I posted this before I had a chance to delve into the subject a little more. Pretty much right after you posted i got to spend some time researching...and you are right on sir. I appreciate it.

It probably also is due to the next power down being a 2.5-15x. I wouldn’t be surprised if the reticle was the same lens between the two. If it were correct at any higher of a power it would never work on the lower powered option. It could also be due to the FOV but I’d guess it’s more tied to shared parts.

I also wondered about that. But then read in matches guys stay somewhere between like 14x and 16x to keep a good FOV during target engagements at different ranges. But im sure it varies between shooters like anything else.

If the reticle subtends properly at 27x and because of poor light conditions or mirage you cannot really use max power on the scope, then you can't use the reticle (without some math on the fly) to range or hold.
Much safer to have the reticle subtend properly at less than max power on such a high power SFP scope.

I rarely use my Minox ZP5 5-25 or Cronus 4.5-29 at max power, generally because I want to take advantage of the increased FOV at a lower power, even when mirage is low to nonexistent. Of course this is why I prefer FFP scopes; I pick the power that suits my needs, accommodating mirage, low light conditions (rarely a problem with the Cronus or the Minox), desired increased field of view, etc. and the reticles always subtend.
