OK,I'm looking to buy a NF 2.5-10x32 for an AR-15 SPR setup. From a very reputable source on AR-15 and I've had numerous good dealings with this company (that's why I'll keep his company un-named), they were trying to tell me of the logic of a mil-dot reticle with MOA knobs:

1) Mil ranging is only a loose estimate

2) 1/4 MOA is a finer adjustment than 0.1 mil

He seemed rather convinced about this right way. Rather than argue with the polite gentleman, I told him my tactical scopes are all mil/mil and my head is geared mil/mil.

I know I'm right, but anybody see sense in his logic?

Re: Mil reticle/MOA adj - sound logical to you?!?

His is not logic, it's salesmanship. There is nothing 'loose' about Mils. It's a method of ranging. And you can't hold the difference between .36 and .26.

Re: Mil reticle/MOA adj - sound logical to you?!?

If you dont use "clicks", then why not?

1/4MOA is a finer adjsutment than 1/10th mil, so you may want MOA adjustments for sighting in. Then, if you want your ret mil, have it mil.

I dont use clicks. I hold over, using the multiple crosshairs I have under my main crosshair.

If you click in to adjust for wind and holdover, then having MOA clicks and a mil ret would be stupid.

Sounds like someone has some MOA/Mil scopes he needs to sell

Mil ranging isn't as precise as a LRF but it works well enough out to about 800 yards or so and farther with practice. That said ranging is only one thing to do with a mil reticle.

The click thing is just silly.

Re: Mil reticle/MOA adj - sound logical to you?!?

The logic is that's the way it was for the first 20 years of tactical scopes, Mil/MOA. Many folks were trained or learned that way. And it works, after a fashion.

Now we have a better mousetrap; MIL/MIL. MIL/MOA still works, but the new way is better, easier, and less prone to error for the math challenged.

But the real problem is never mentioned: Does your scope adjust in MOA or IPHY? Some makers say MOA, and it's really IPHY, and some makers don't really know themselves. Some folks think it does not matter, as it is only 0.04" of difference. But multiply that pesky 0.04" error by enough adjustment in inches to reach 1000 yds, and your error is now 18-20".

But a MIL is always a MIL. And that's the name of that tune...

Keith,

The swaro laserguide WILL do that. I had it ping almost 1700yds, hand-held to a tree with no leaves.

Re: Mil reticle/MOA adj - sound logical to you?!?

What he said. I got mine when I got sick of my Leica giving up on me at about 600 yards in other than sunny weather and even in the sun not working much farther past. I first got my hands on the Swarovski at Tac Pro's match from a fellow competitor when my Leica wouldn't hit the targets at 1100 and the Swarovski had no problem. I have hit a street sign at 1640 yards down the road with it. Good gear.

Hey JB! Long time no talk. Hope all is well.

Re: Mil reticle/MOA adj - sound logical to you?!?

Thanks for the replies guys. Glad I only like beer and am not crazy.

Mil/mil math works for me .... once you get beyond estimating thing metric, just move the decimal point.

I honestly don't think this is a case of sell what you have. This manufacturer/dealer has waaayy too much volume for that. He could order a semi-full of whatever he wanted and sell it. And they are happy to sell me mil/mil on order. Honestly I think the company sees mil/moa as the logical solution and I just could not wrap my brain around that.

It's a great company with great products and even with their advice, they are still a great company. I'll just choose my own configuration.

Nothing metric about mils. You can use them with yards and inches just as easy.
