I've been reading up and I know it's known target size x 27.77 / by mil read or known target size / 36 x 1000 / by mil read. Why buy a mildot when you can just use a range finder?Looking at leupold and they charge 150.00 extra for mildot. Why not buy a range finder for 200.00 and be done with it?I'm a newbie ,please explain pros and cons of mildot.Am I missing something?

Re: MIldot scopes please school me /new to longrange

No, but I might be a heretic. Using a mil dot reticle for range finding is "old school", but many believe it's part of a sniper's craft. As for me, I prefer a LRF everytime for what I do. So, you're not missing anything except an opportunity to learn another skill. Most tactical shooting competitions require the use of a mil dot or mil scale reticle to determine target range, given a dimension.

Re: MIldot scopes please school me /new to longrange

ranging is such a small part of of the mildot reticles, they can be used for holdovers, wind holds, measuring POI and adjusting to get hits where you want them, but sure rock a duplex reticle, and see where that lands you. I would spend some time reading around here before you ask why a mildot is important and can i get by without one. Short answer, yeah you can get by without one, but not very good.

Good answer. I thought he was just carping about range finding, but you are right on with the rest of the reasons to use mil/MOA reticles.

It occurs to me that there must be a lot of folks out there with Cabelas gift cards just burning a hole in their pocket, based on the threads we've been seeing the last couple of days.

People just won't respect the sanctity of waiting until the 25th to check out the stocking, I guess.

Re: MIldot scopes please school me /new to longrange

3 things i see here

1. You havent been here long enough to start throwing insults around.
2. You dont know shit about anything related to this site.
3. You have paper thin skin, and are probably only maybe at most 18 given the way your question is worded and your comebacks and your lack of knowledge.

my recommendation- Go over to AR15 you are better off over there

You must crash a LOT to make r/c toys that expensive. My sympathies.

Deadly makes a good suggestion, though. Try arfcom. To quote an asshole "that's where the real brain trust is."

ETA: Damn, he beat me to it...

Does that mean the Hot GF's thread is unlocked?

If your rc helis cost more than your guns, you're not into guns much.

What he said. You can carry another piece of gear, subject to damage and dead batteries, or you can learn to use a mildot or other ranging reticle. Good knowledge to have as a backup, and as Jack says, in some matches you are not allowed to use rangefinders. Do a search for "Mil Dot Master", a slide rule for the math challenged (I have one) and look at the Nightforce/Exbal/PSSF programs for handheld PC.

Long range, tactical, F-class, it's all fun and all shooting. Sign up for the online learning here on the forum and look for local matches in your area- then show up and shoot. Damn near all of us will bend over backwards to help new shooters get started.

Fill out your profile, it's considered courteous, and there may be a board member nearby.

Oh, and thin skin and smartass answers don't go real far, on this board or in real life. Pretend you just walked into a roomful of strangers, all of whom know more about shooting than you do, and you want advice. That's not far from the truth. We'll help you when we can. Most of us have been on the board a while (look at post counts- I'm still a relative noob) and sort of 'know' each other Just as in a room together, there's a certain amount of shit-flipping.

I like the Corkie comment...reminds me of the Garth video..."standing outside, the fire...life is not tried, if it's merely survived.." you get the idea.

Re: MIldot scopes please school me /new to longran

Trexx...... I suggest you try out a Counter Sniper scope for your first time. They have dual mildots so you can verify you range while you range.

Sorry Bolt,
I think I just spit up a bit in my mouth. Don't worry I got it back down before it hit the computer.
