I have a model 7 that is a .243 right now. This gun was gave to me a long time ago and I really just have no use for the caliber. Was thinking on getting it rechambered to something that interest me. I know the bolt face is wrong, but I’ve already been told they could open that up to a magnum one.

Any reason why I shouldn’t go with a 7mm saum in this model 7? I’m thinking about sending it to LRI to have it done and hopefully make a shooter out of it. I would end up setting it up as a hunting rifle.

Thanks.

Seems like kind of a bad use for what is a petite version of a Remington 700. If you’re gonna do a Saum (which is shoehorned to begin with), buy a regular 700 receiver, do a Wyatt’s mod and use long magazine. Leave the 7 for a medium cartridge handy hunter.

As a SAUM/WSM you'll be pretty limited on OAL if you intend to use the 175-195gr projectiles. If you're set on the SAUM it'd be a good idea to spec a zero-length freebore unless you want to shoot factory ammo. LRI will likely have to futz with the feed rails/ramp depending on how you wanted it to feed too (ADL/BDL/DBM). If you went with the SAUM it'd be a performer for sure and as a lightweight hunter it'll have some good recoil without a brake.

Personally, I have a mag-fed 7mm WSM with a .050" freebore. I have a DMB that allows for seating to 2.980" OAL and the only projectile I can really seat to the lands is the stubby 180 SMK; everything else jumps a ways.

As an alternative to the SAUMs and WSMs and other 'magnums' stuffed into the short action, you might consider the 7mm Sherman Short Mag or the 7mm SAW, or the old .284 Winchester. Just about any of the stuff mentioned above should be sufficient for "big game" in the western hemisphere at "hunting" distances. 2¢

Definitely understand what you are saying. I just don’t really have any wants or needs for anything in the medium to light range. Pretty much already have that covered. This model 7 I have probably hasn’t been out in 15+ years, it was a gun that my dad gave me a long time ago. Won’t ever get rid of it so I thought about repurposing it. May just keep it put on up and go a different route.

The model 7 actually cam out in a 7mm and 300 saum so it can definatley be done.
The mag box in the 7 is the same length as a 700 but it doesn’t allow for the wyatts.Another thing to consider is the feed rails may/likely need opening up to fit the saum case.

If you stick to the 150-160gr projectiles with appropriate reamer it will work just fine.
Is it ideal...probably not,but who cares.

Yep. Came to say this. The 7rsaum was originally introduced in the Model Seven. I’ve shot one. It was awesome.
