Monthly Sporting Rifle match RATON NM

Re: Monthly Sporting Rifle match RATON NM

It was a great time as usual, my son Dylan had a great time and shot a 38 for his first time out, he really enjoyed the match and is looking foward to the next one.

thanks to all the guys in squad 1 for making him feel comfortable he was nervous going into the weekend and you guys made him feel good about his shooting.

thanks again!

Re: Monthly Sporting Rifle match RATON NM

It was a pleasure watching Dylan shoot. He did fantastic and will be a force to reckon with in the the near future. Thanks for letting us shoot with you guys.

For any of those that have not shot this match, it is worth your time. All that I talked to had a blast! We had 4 new shooters to this match on our squad and all did a great job of shooting.

Thanks to Mike K. for putting on the match and we will see you guys early next year.

Two weeks ago I was looking for powder and hadn't given the shooting incident and subsequent hoarding any thought until there was no powder to be found. I then got onto Hodgdon's web site and searched for dealers in VA, which is where I am at present, and called everyone in the 540 area code. I found a guy in Fort Valley, VA working out of his house and scored a case of IMR 8208 XBR and 5K CCI BR4 primers. I don't know if he has H4350 or not and everything I saw was 1#, but hey, powder is powder. Also check with Bruno's, I talked to them about the same time and they expected a powder delivery this week. Hope this helps. Here's his contact info:

Re: Monthly Sporting Rifle match RATON NM

There's a local shop here with several 1lb bottles of h4350. I'll be in Raton next weekend if you need me to bring some along. He could probably ship to you if you need it before the match.

Re: Monthly Sporting Rifle match RATON NM

Thanks for your help with the powder guys! I reloaded and I did have enough to do the 200 rounds. my local guy said he was getting some H4350 in so it looks like I'll be good to go.

Thanks again!

Re: Monthly Sporting Rifle match RATON NM

It was a great day of shooting a little cold but fun none the less!

Stage 7 has gone from the easiest to the hardest stage with just a small pile of logs!

Re: Monthly Sporting Rifle match RATON NM

Fun times yesterday despite it being friggin cold for the first couple stages. At least there was not a lot of snow and mud.

I had a great squad and we all had a bunch of fun.

If stage 7 would have been same-same, I might have touched a 59. Damn. More practice shooting off sticks is needed.

On the last two stages there was nothing to indicate wind other than reading the reaction of the plates. Made my head hurt. I held off the 880 yard plate by about 1.1 mils and still hit it on the downwind side.

Re: Monthly Sporting Rifle match RATON NM

Nice shooting to all and nice to see everybody in a great day of shooting. I agree that the wind was tough, even mirage was difficult. Nice shooting to the top guys and notable mention to Christopher, high new shooter with a 50 at his first SRM!

So true!

Hey everyone I am bring one of the guys from Butch's Reloading up with me to shoot this match this weekend for his first time. He offered to bring any orders with him that people would like to pick up in Raton. This works out to be a great savings on hazmat items and all the other good stuff they sell. Just call the office and let them know that you want your order on the truck going up with me.

Thanks Sean

Huge thanks to everybody involved for a fantastic match yesterday. What an amazing place to shoot, and a great group of people to shoot with. Thanks to the guys in my squad for being so helpful and putting up with a FNG like me. Lots to be learned down in Raton. How many times can the wind shift a full 180 during a 6 shot string? haha... Mirage and dust blowing one direction... Shots pushed off target in the other direction... My most vivid memories are those moments when I had absolutely NO IDEA what to hold for wind... And I think I heard guys saying the wind wasn't really that bad yesterday! Looking forward to the next match and learning more about this game. Nothing puts a smile on your face like hearing that steel ring way out there! Thanks again to everyone who puts this match together.

Regards,

ScottyD

yup - just to echo what ScottyD said above...(I was also in the same squad as he was) It is the people at this match that really make it so great. Anyone who is a little scared of shooting this format should not be. Lots of coaching and advice (and friendly teasing!) from the more experienced folk make this an unbeatable learning experience. Thanks to Tom, Dino, and everyone else on my squad who suffered through with this newbie South African...

Been thinking about the awesome 56 c ward put up on Sunday.

The course record was 58 on the old course that was never changed. Mike changed it up a couple of years ago by making some of the 300 yard big plates into small, 6" plates. Another 58 was shot.

Now things have really gotten interesting (tougher).

Station 7 has to be shot from sticks. Station 4 was made tougher with every target beyond 540 yards. Station 8's 375 yard target went away and situated itself out at 730 yards. Station 6's longest target was moved out another 100 yards and up on a mountain. Station 9 got stretched out a bit as well.

c ward's 56 on Sunday is like shooting a 59 on the original course IMO. SMOKIN'!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats to Chuck on his 56. Given the current course difficulty and the conditions Sunday, I think this is one of the top scores ever for the SRM.

BTW, the original course (back when we were lucky to get 15 shooters) may have been harder than the current course as there were quite a few standing sticks shots - some of them @ 600+ yards with the targets obscured in tall grass. The top scores were generally in the 40s then. Its hard to say for sure as everyone has gotten a lot better since then and our perspectives have changed.

There have been 5 58's Kolar twice and once each for myself , Lonnie D , John S , and Rick C . IIRC there have been 5 or 6 57's and around 8 or 10 56's .

The original course was harder than it is now , approx 60% of the shots were sitting or higher with 2 or 3 stages that were all standing stick shots depending on the time of the year .

We made it easier for a while to draw more repeat business and now since everybody is getting better at it we're making it harder again .

The course has pretty much been in a state of flux for the whole time with little changes happening every year .
