As a 1911 builder, I will say that constantly dropping slide on a finely polished sear will deteriorate the trigger quality. If it is set up right, it shouldn't drop and if it is the half cock hooks should catch it. While it won't hurt a colt or tisa, it will damage a quality stoned sear nose if done regularly.

For smiths, I'd be looking at Chambers Customs, but I have no dog in the fight with the key discussion of dropping slides. I agree, I wouldn't pay $5 for a 1911 that fucks up when dropping the slide, but slowly making the excellent trigger worse over time by dropping on empty chamber is whatever to me, as long as it functions fine.

I got the Smith part covered(looks in mirror), I was just picking his brain a bit.
When the slide slams against breechface of slide, with no rd being chambered to slow and cushion impact, a tight 1911 can peen the lugs, hood, and breechface. It is also fairly hard on slide stops that aren't forged. The hammer hooks are held off the sear nose when slidenis retracted. When slide slams forward the hammer hooks are allowed to slam into the sear nose. On a worked over 1911 that has a finely polished(think 2500+ grit stoned primary angle and a secondary escape angle) sear nose, that repeated slamming of hooks into sear nose will damage the sear nose. Will it fail? Not as long as everything was stoned and correctly, adequate sear leg tension is there, and hammer hooks are .020" or taller and cut at no less than 90° to hammer pin axis. It will just destroy the primary/secondary sear engagement point and surface finish. It will turn a nice slick icicle break into a cooked carrot break. The peening of breech, lug and slide stop shaft(depends on how tight barrel is fit and material of slide stop) is a concern. If you accidently drop the slide on an empty chamber 20-50x, probably not gonna be an issue. If you drop slide on empty chamber multiple times everyday, yeah you will damage it. There really isn't a reason to drop a slide on an empty chamber on any gun, other than trying to look cool. It takes a quarter of a second more to ride the slide fwd on an empty chamber with your support hand, as opposed to thumbing slide release and letting it fly. Next installment I'll explain why it's not good to spin an open revolver cylinder and flick it shut like in the movies, lol.
I should add that damage to slide stop barrel feet, barrel hood, and slide breechface is relative to recoil spring and 1911 size. A commander 45 or 10mm will have a 22+lb spring in it vs a govt 9mm 10lb spring.

At what point is dropping a slide on an empty chamber needed or required when using it as a tool? That's a serious question. At the range, making ready, insert loaded mag and drop slide to chamber a rd, fine. Shoot to slide lock, insert fresh mag and drop slide to chamber a rd, fine. Shoot to slide lock and your done shooting, you can drop slidenon empty chamber or just ride slide fwd with support hand. You choose to drop slide on empty chamber, ok, why? What does it accomplish? Why is that better than riding slide fwd on empty chamber before you pack up to leave? These are serious questions, maybe there's something I'm missing, but I can't for the life of me figure out why you'd choose to drop slide on an empty chamber.

A lot of us are probably guilty of that.
A quick reference to the website for my local range range steel target menu shows that they’re all well over 2-3 MOA for even the smallest targets. So the need for sub MOA precision isn’t really that critical to make steel ring.

Not really, I said clearly it's not gonna damage it if you do it accidently or occasionally. When I finish a build and it is in the 200rd test phase, I do purposely drop the slide 10x to verify there is no hammer follow. That will not hurt it. Now dropping the slide all the time for no reason other than "cause I can" is tarded. I've yet to hear anyone answer my question about why are you constantly dropping a slide on empty chambers, except "muh tools"? I'm really done with this, you guys can do whatever the hell you want. I DID say dropping the slide all the time for no reason at all will definitely damage it. Now if you have a box stock 5lb trigger in tisa, yeah you won't make the trigger feel worse. If it's a race gun or a 5000.00 custom, it will damage the sear nose.
you see, that doesn't make sense. if it was going to peen the metal, it would do it all the time, or not. it's not something that magically happens at a threshold.
Sear and hammer hooks aren't hardened either. Some 1911 schmoe cut them on a jig with a hand file.
