My mother was a teacher for 35 years, my wife is on her 17th year. I can say that it is for the most part not the teachers themselves. At least K-9th, the SJW teach in highschool (10%) or universities (90% of general ed classes)
This starts at home, when parents can not deal with the emotional baggage of their child does not winning. I am sure it brings back memories of their childhood also. So they push for "participation" awards. This makes everyone feel good. But the emotional growth of the child is stunted.
It is much easier to deal with an upset 4 year old than 24 year old. They are just passing the Buck and continue to until society has to deal with it.
For the most part teachers are "soldiers in the trenches". And at least around here, most are disgusted by bad policy just like you and I.

One of the black belt instructors at my kids dojo, had her child flunk a ninth grade class because the teacher gave her some zeros for work not completed in the week the kids grandmother died. When the mother went to a conference with that teacher she was told "(your daughter) should have just got over it and done her work." I think most of us can agree that things like that are unfair.

But most importantly when you work somewhere your employer sets the rules, and it is a condition of employment that you follow the rules. If you don't follow the rules you can (and should) be fired. It states in the link that the school policy was no grades less than 50%. In my opinion the school was right to fire her. After all the students are probably required to follow rules. How can you expect students to follow rules if their teachers are allowed to make up any rules they want?

I know a few teachers who are friends of my wife. Hear lots of horror stories. However, there are two sides to most issues. There are some teachers that have a definite GOD complex, however, this doesn't appear to be one of those situations.

The whole zero question is twofold. I do believe that if the child tries and cannot get the right answer, a zero is a pretty poor result. Even when I was in school, teachers gave partial credit for what you presented. This is part of parental oversight..to ensure your kids do a professional job at completing their assignment. Even if a parent cannot help with solving the problem, it is important to ensure your kids do their work and provide as high a quality output as is required.

Not turning in an assignment and expecting to get something other than a zero is BS. Unless there was an extremely compelling reason, then I have no issue giving a zero. In today's world, assignments and due dates are posted on line and there is no excuse for "I forgot" and other lame ass shit reasons. If I blow a commit date at work without providing notice and a good reason, there is hell to pay from my manager. I also enforce the same doctrines to my staff and more importantly to my kids at home.

Most teachers are pretty liberal in their attitudes/grading.

"Liberal" in meaning that if you make an effort you will usually get some credit.

In many things in life a strong effort but imperfect result is enough.

Very seldom is doing nothing the right answer.

In this case doing nothing is tantamount to "Fuck you".

I am willing to accept "ignorance of a subject" but laziness is unacceptable.

These do nothing kids are the ones that never accept responsibility.

I had a complete and utter blast. Learned a couple of very valuable things about my rifle setup and more importantly my lack of follow through. Curt is a really patient instructor. Met another Hide member who was a complete blast as well. Really great shooter. I walked away on Sunday with:

1. A lot of pride for being able to successfully and consistently engage the targets at 1,300 yards.
2. Complete and accurate DOPE for both Hornady and PRIME ammo that I use. I can now true my ballistic solvers.
3. Some new friends that I am sure I will see again next year.
4. An enlarged liver...LOL

I have a daughter who is smart, but has some learning and ADD issues. Perhaps related to being a preemie. Medication helped for awhile, then it didn't switched meds, it still works but not entirely.

At the end of the day, she will need to be responsible for her performance regardless of if she has issues to deal with. Last year we had issues with her not turning stuff in and getting zeroes. We did NOT blame the teacher or school for her grades we held her 100% accountable. It was tough sometimes but we made her own her failures.

We were concerned this year because she started 6th grade and the time when grades really count and it is really tough to catch up is at hand. She was getting Cs through Fs last year. Suddenly she is an honor student, mostly As with a few Bs. She was studying until bedtime tonight as she has a reading test and science test tomorrow.

I asked her what the difference was between last year and this year. What she basically told me was that she finally understood how important school and grades were because of how hard we were on her, and so it now mattered to her and she understood that it was her responsibility. So she buckled down and got it done.

You don't do a kid a favor by giving them 50% credit for doing nothing. You only hurt them.

Yes, I agree. But when you look at things going on like in the other thread on Linux, it's not too hard to imagine a time where government could impose regulations on employers that are similar to the 50% minimum score policy we are talking about. We're already on our way when we pay people more in subsidies to stay home than they would make if they took an entry-level job. And for the record (regarding your post before this one), Absolutely. It is not doing kids any favors to give them 50% for turning in nothing. We're not talking about a kid whose grandmother died that week. Exceptions can, and always have been made for students with reasonable excuses. It's the ones who made no effort that this applies to, and when you give them 50% for doing nothing, all you will do is increase the number of students who made no effort.

A kid comes in and makes a 90% on a test. The kid is a good kid and tried and studied hard for the test. The kid has a low A (90%) average so far.
Next week, the same kid comes in, and for some reason has a bad day, and makes a 49% on the next test.
Since a 49 equals a 0 in this lady's class, the kid now has a 45% average in the class (averaging the 90% between two tests).
If the kid gets to keep the 49% the kid would have a 69.5% average in the class. There's a whole lot of difference in a 45% average and a 69% average. The 45 would almost be impossible to recover from before the end of the nine weeks, especially for a kid that is struggling, but working hard in the class.
So, in my opinion, the teacher, giving 0 points for anything under 50% is stealing points from the student.
If the kid is just a lazy, good for nothing, student, then he'll continue to make failing grades and will fail the class. Let the kid hang himself.
If the kid is a good kid and had a bad day, this could really blow the wind out of their sails and set a bad tone for a good student.
To take away points that the kid earned, is to me, wrong.

If you're a straight A student your grades are treated like Olympic scoring, it's tossed out.
The F student grade gets brought up on the curve based on the mediocre students, never the exceptional ones.
I've got a straight A 12yr old at home and the curves piss him off because he works for his grades.
He does fully understand that the teachers are hurting the other students using a curve. They will be shocked when they finally have to produce good work.
He came home bitching on Monday that the teacher dinged him for 35 text points because he misspelled her name. I thought it was excessive but I didn't say that to him. My response was you've had her for a teacher for 6+ weeks, you should know how to spell her name. She knows yours...

In college, it was not done this way. Grade inflation, which I admit does occur, catches up with you in many ways. In high school, many kids take AP tests to bolster their chances for getting into a good college or get credit for courses taken in high school. If you received inflated grades, it will be apparent when you take these tests. Same with going from college to graduate school. You have to get by the MCATs, and the advanced tests for the GRE if you are trying to go to Medical school or a top graduate school. Good luck with passing those if you were a C student whose grade was bumped to a B.

I had several professors in college that said the kids that scored above 90 ruined any way of curve fitting the data. My freshman physics class (Physics Majors version) was used to weed out weakness. We had almost 40 or so kids start as Physics majors and at the end of the year, only 20 were allowed to move forward and only 12 graduated with a degree in Physics. Everyone got into a pretty decent graduate school because they did well on the subject test of the GRE or MCAT or LSAT

If an assignment was not turned in, there would be opportunity for additional work to either offset or replace what would have been a zero. Habitual don't-give-a-fuck's excluded. Every grade school I have heard of will allow students to make up assignments that are missed for good reasons with the bar for that set down at sports.

If a kid's life is so screwed up that it knocks them down from a 90% average to 49%, that's their parents fault.

I think it's a pretty safe assumption that the missed assignments were not excused or made up, in which case the teacher did nothing wrong and that school policy is the real problem (and possibly just an attempt to improve average grades and divert funding from schools that grade fairly).

I had a Chemistry teacher in college curve a test grade two points so that I could have an A on a test. I made an 88 on the test, but I had worked so hard to pass the test and understand the material, I had put in so many hours studying, coming by her office and asking questions, she curved it for me. Now, I will say this, I didn't know anything about it at all. Another student told me about it after the semester was over.

My kid is dyslexic. We can afford a reading tutor, and he has an IEP through the school. He has a 140 IQ, so he actually reads at the lower end of his grade level despite his learning disability... I've made it very clear to him that no fucks are given because something is hard for him or he doesn't like it. Yea, he has a harder time reading than his dumber classmates. Welcome to the real world where injustice is the norm, and power is what makes shit "fair" or "unfair". I told him years ago that loosers use the word "fair". Expect it to be unfair. Adapt and overcome, or don't complain, period.
Sound harsh? You have to actually RAISE your kids. The "by osmosis" way doesn't work. Tell them the truth, and then drive it home.

Parents and teachers primary job is to prepare children for the real world and to be productive members of society. I lost my mother and grandmother last school year, both of which my son was very close with. My son missed one day of school for each funeral. I picked up his work assignments from the school so that he could complete them while he was out. Policies like this just hurt kids in the long run. I don't know many people who get a 50% paycheck for doing 0% of the work.
