How powerful does a laser have to be to thoroughly fry a camera? Asking for a friend.
Most of the new systems have laser defeating filters... For low power lasers that is... Better off obscuring the lens with paint, or glue or high velocity particulates... Or so I've been told

7 watts is more than sufficient, if it is in the visible light spectrum. Most cameras have a Infrared filter, as well as a UV Haze filter. You have to be on-axis, pointing straight at the camera for greatest effect, exposure time of several seconds.
A paintball gun works too. Or, so a friend told me. The paintball gun can be effective for the flash strobe too, if it uses opaque paint, preferably a very dark color like Green, Blue or Black.
True pros take a picture of the Mayor's car, and put it in front of the camera.
Hard-core operators put a picture of the Mayor's mistress car in front of the camera.. for political splatter effect.
In PHX about 10 years ago someone fully dressed as Santa showed up with boxes and just hung them over the cameras.
Who needs a laser when you have Santa?

apparently you need to have permits to be able to use one.
