This is one reason
Another is texture.
And lastly, God put animals on this planet so's we can eat 'em. I like that reason even better.
AJ, have you ever tried putting that block of goo into the smoker to see what would happen?

It's outstanding Deep Fried with a light tempura batter. Seriously. NOBODY eats more meat than this guy, NOBODY. It's also good on hot summer days chilled, and I mean chilled big time, the good stuff from Nippon Land, with soy, sesame seeds n chopped scallions. Oh ya Sake. Touch of Sake in the soy sauce. Nice little side dish. I've never smoked it but I have smoked Mochi when having Yaki Mochi. The Japanese use to carry that stuff in their pockets during war. Very filling and enjoyable. There's so many great foods out there and so damn many people have no idea what they're missing, but I get it. I use to be pretty closed minded once myself.........;)

Jesus, not eggplant.......F/F/S's.......next, you're going to be singing the praises of zucchini.........

My most recent foodie epiphany was Goose Liver (on top of a Filet Mignon) in Austria. I'm slobbering just typing this........

Mouth is watering as I type this god damnit. Thanks for nothing. Zucchini is a weed. I'm still close minded to Zucchini. It should be removed from the face of the earth, period. Now eggplant breaded n fried is awesome or BBQ'd, or my absolute favorite is with all the other goodies associated with Korean BBQ and LOTS of Kimchi. Daaaaaaaaaamn.

Ah... foie gras on top of steak. Now you're talking.

That' is the basis of Beef Wellington, BTW. That would be "Hot Pockets" for men who like to eat well!

And AJ is right. Tofu is good. Prepared right. And not served by some man-bun-sporting vegan moonbat on the dirt floor of his yurt.

I'm a huge fan of Pho... great hot-spicy Vietnamese soup. That has variations with Tofu and Nuc Mam in it. Ummmm Asian food.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Korean BBQ and LOTS of Kimchi........Shit, anyone know of a good Korean restaurant in the greater Seattle area ? Our kid's a chef and he makes some hella Kimchi, just not often enough.

Lemme do some research. There use to be a damn good one, along with a damn good Mongolian BBQ place in the Tacoma? SeaTac? area.............. Been yrs tho. Lemme see what I can do. You can get the real deal Kimchi also at Uwajimaya 600 5th Ave S, Seattle, WA 98104
Well, as close to the real deal without having a hookup.;) I gotta a hookup. :p

Closed minded?
I'll have you know it took 25 years before I would even try broccoli.
How is that closed minded? ;^)

A buddy of mine from the 67th SOS is/was Dutch Indonesian. Some of the things he would eat would gag a maggot.
We were in Naples Italy (circa '86 or '87) for a gathering of PJs, Seals and some fellas from the Army.
Jeff ordered calamari and offered some to me. I told him it was just stinky bait.
His response was "Try it. If you don't like it, spit it out. No harm."
I thought that was reasonable so I tried it. Man oh man, was that stink bait ever tasty.
Been trying new things since then and have found very few I don't like the taste of.
Texture. Well, that's a whole nuther ball game. Onions, tofu and a few others fall into that category

^^^^^^^
Ah, yes. Having my meal stare back at me in a restaurant in Barcelona in my Navy days (mid-70s). Gulped that right down. I'll admit that a few glasses of the sangria increased my tolerance level for odd food. And I have no idea what some of the things I ate in Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia, etc, were, but most was damn good.

Unfortunately, those memories get me going about so much of the food in the States being pasteurized and homogenized to death. Grumble grumble. Impossible to get good steak tartare here. Grumble grumble.

Richard

Steak tartare is a perfect example of the texture thing.
I love rare and med rare steaks. Grind that uncooked steak and it's like mush to me. The taste is still great, but the texture kills me.
All this talk has my taste buds asking for cucumber kimchee

I'd eat zucchini long before I'd choke down fuzzy okra.

You guy's just haven't had 'good' tofu done right so many ways. I was all like ya, I'm not doing that. Not even giving it a chance. I was in Japan for 6 yrs so I ended up eating a lot of things I never would have dreamed of. I'm glad I was willing to try so many things out side of my comfort zone that I actually liked.

I was amazed at how many Americans don't even eat rice regularly. The old joke in NOLA was that mom would call from the kitchen and say "the rice is cooking, what do y'all want for dinner?"

Bogey, I ate plenty of okra growing up -- because it was cheap and we were poor. That's how I know I don't care for it. Though it really isn't a question of taste, it's a texture issue like Mike has.

All first worlders have things they're not fond of eating. Even if they haven't tried them yet. Even you. Well, Louisiana? Is that the first world? ;)
