THE STORIED HISTORY OF THE AFTERNOON PLINKER: AN AMERICAN MAINSTAY.

A rifle behind every blade of grass. For generations, outdoor oriented Americans maintained the fundamentals of civilian marksmanship and the basic qualifications of the Militia by popping paper plates and soup cans with the humble .22 LR rifle. Developed in 1859 as a rimfire cartridge for small and easily concealed vest and casual wear revolvers, and then found new life with the advent of smokeless powder in 1886 with the introduction of the Savage and Stevens "boys" line of bolt action and falling block single shots that provided endless fun and shooting proficiency after chores are finished. This tradition continued through the subsequent century with a variety of manufacturers such as Ruger, Winchester, Henry, and Armalite, many of them under the trademark and partnership of fabled retailers like Sears Roebuck and Co., all producing their own lines of budget utility .22s suited for wide ranges of shooting disciplines. What kinds of .22s can be found on the antique market right now?
