Used to know a Ball Turret gunner real nice guy. Think he was 1 of 2 guys in his group that survived if I remember correctly.
My father was a B-24 ball turret gunner with the 829th of 485th in Italy. Flew 23 missions then came home. Never understood how he could fit in that thing.

Why is that? What happens?
Disclaimer: I'm not a metallurgist. So I will throw out my amateur opinion based on real life experience. It's either direction of impact or shock of impact, but when you drop something made of spring steel there is a good chance it will shatter in the near future under load. I don't know the reason, but I have seen it happen too many times not to give it credence.
