Reminds me of a story about a Sting Ray Vette. The gentleman relating the story was the one working on it, and the short of it was that--between coats of metallic black and clear--they were on 13th and final. The owner stopped by to see how things were going, walked into the booth, and promptly schmeared his hand right through the middle of the driver's door before asking if it was dry.
