Tachibana-class destroyer Nashi was sunk on 28 July 1945 off Heigun Island in shallow waters by carrier aircraft of US Navy’s TF 38. After spending almost a decade underwater, she was refloated on 21 September 1954, and as the hull condition was deemed sufficiently good, repairs started a year later on 10 September 1955. All previous Japanese armaments were removed, and new American equipment were installed.
She was recommissioned on 31 May 1956, as JDS Wakaba (DE-261) and served in the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. In 1960, the ship received an AN/SPS-8B radar for use as a radar trials ship, as seen in the last two photographs; the first Japanese ship to receive this type of radar. In 1968, the ship was used for experiments involving acoustic torpedoes.
She was the only ship of the Imperial Japanese Navy that became a part of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, and for a brief period of time the largest ship in the JMSDF.
