I am thinking about buying a Browning Bronze safe which measures 27x36x60 and weighs 700 pounds, the BR34F. . I was wondering if a heavy duty two wheeled appliance dolly would work to move it from the outside porch and through the house to its resting location. Once through the door, which is a standard 36 inch entry, I could turn the whole pallet and have a pallet jack inside the house if necessary to move it through the house. I plan to lay down a walk-way of plywood to move on. I am going to use a skid steer loader with pallet forks to move it from the trailer to the outside porch.

Just wanting to hear your experiences with moving one of these safes. Thanks.

Re: Moving Gun Safe

I would check your deck out first. If its wood. Friend of mine got his safe stolen till it made it to his back deck. Fell through the deck and they left it behind after that. But what would it cost to deliver? Might be worth it. Thats how I did mine. Was well worth the money. They showed up with a motorized dolly. Work like a charm.

Re: Moving Gun Safe

I had mine delivered (amazingly enough all my buddies were busy???). They lowered the pallet of the tailgate and stood the safe up on the sidewalk. Then they removed the pallet put the box back on it and laid the safe down on the porch, resting on four pieces of cut broom handle. Then they rolled it through the house on it's side.

A 700lb safe is light - a HD appliance dolly will be fine. The roller pipe thing works too, but I only use that for safes that I can't do on a dolly.

Just did it today with a HD dolly and a 650# safe. I would advise getting a few more people than you think you need. I thought me and a friend could horse it around easy enough...wrong. We got it in with a few choice swear words and a lot of sweat. I was pleased to find that the digital lock is fried. That's one heavy nightstand in the bedroom right now.

Re: Moving Gun Safe

Midge, I was wondering if you had to go up any steps or was it all flat going. Do you know how many pounds the dolly was rated for.

I'm also wondering what is the best way to get the safe off of the pallet and onto the floors. Any trick here as well?

Thanks for all the reponses from everyone.

Re: Moving Gun Safe

Just did this last week with the SAME size safe.

The appliance dolly will work just fine... BUT you still need another person or 2. You will need a guide for making through doors and stairways.....

Remember take it slow and be safe.... its a VERY easy way to get hurt.

Matt.,

Re: Moving Gun Safe

i have moved many safes and heavy pieces.go to a rental store and rent a set of piano dollys.this is two pieces that strap to object and then you push or pull on these levers which then raise it through mechanical advantage and violla! you now are on wheels(this is if your only moving on flat surfaces)if you have stairs you want the electric hand truck that can traverse stairs. a good plumbing or heating contractor would have one if not rentable.a two person job.pick your people wisely,so your not working againt each other.also know your own skill set.you could really get hurt or worse when 700+ goes where you didnt want it to

I have seen fire protection guys move heavy gas cylinders with these(easy as heavy as your safe) up and down stairs. They are impressive tools, but you have to be aware of weight limits on the surfaces you're crossing as previously said. I definately recommend them though for stairs, over some come-along set up

I've had the pleasure of helping move five gun safes. This is the only way we've done any of them. Slow, but it works.

Re: Moving Gun Safe

Have tried all the rental places around here and it is a no go on the electric dolly.. Might be able to set the pallet and all on the cement porch with a skid steer loader with forks.. If so, sounds like I might be able to use a appliance dolly or the piano dolly from there..
