Not sure if this is the right place, mod move if needed.
I am moving from Ca to NC and trying to figure out the best way to move all of the firearms. Movers will move the house and I was planning on driving with the valuables including all the guns. The question is there a better way to get all the firearms out there. The collection includes 6 rifles and 4 handguns if the amount makes a difference.

Thanks

I've moved with my firearms a few times. Typically I put them first into the U-Haul so they have to get through a four bedroom house worth of shit to get to them, but in my normal armed vacation travels they're simply in the back of the Explorer. Provided you're casing and moving them unloaded, there will be no issue. Here's a link to the law covering the transportation: 18 U.S. Code § 926A - Interstate transportation of firearms | LII / Legal Information Institute

Concealed carry is a different issue, but you coming from Cali that may not apply. If you're taking the southerly route, you won't have any issues at all with the firearms through the I-10 or I-40 corridors since those are all free states down there, most of which you still have guys rolling with shottys in the window rack. When I have cause to travel through IL on I-70, I of course lock away my CC pistol.

What Roddd said is good advice; do not leave them in the car over night. Hotel parking lots are commonly targeted by thieves. I may get sideways looks lugging a pair or more Pelicans in, but fuck'em. If for some reason you do, make it as difficult as possible for them to smash and grab them. An additional cable lock from the case to somewhere anchored the vehicle is highly advisable, even for those rest area and truck stop pauses you'll take. You don't have to make it impossible, just make them think it isn't worth the additional time.

Welcome to an (almost) free state!

Is this a move with the military? If it's a military sponsored move, I would ship them myself. It's a huge PITA if you want movers contracted by the military to ship your guns.

I'm moving to VA this summer and I'm taking my rifles with me.

My job requires I move about every year to two years. I will tell you if you use a mover most will not accept ammunition or reloading supplies such as powder and primers. I have had them ship guns with the furniture if I had the truck loaded up with other stuff I needed. I put them in cases and locked them. Another thing to consider is getting your firearms insured. I have all my stuff insured and it covers total replacement cost along with optics, cases, and accessories.

I used a POD to move from Texas to VA. What is nice is you provide your own lock, so only you have easy access. May be overkill for just the gun collection if you are otherwise using a moving truck though.

The only time I used the contracted movers they had me remove the FIRING PINS of some of the guns. I asked the guy why and he said they had to be completely disabled. Apparently the cable and trigger locks weren't good enough.

All our other PCS moves have been with them in one of the cars, buried under the rest of the crap we're hauling.

If you drive, FOPA only covers you when you are transiting a given state. If you stop overnight, you have to meet the requirements of the state you are staying in.

But as mentioned, the southern routes are pretty much OK on firearms.
