Interesting.
LRF backup "L" -scale for milling, 0.1mrad deviation ladder from 0 to 7mrad.. Crosshair thickness half way between P4 and P4 fine, 0.05mrad.

Hmmm. Interesting comment.
From sniper´s point of view, I personally cant figure out single thing what P4F/P4 would do better than MSR.

The thing is that this reticle is really a P4 (medium) with a 0.1 milrad scale and a stadia reticle system.

Of course somebody might be able to pick out the thickness differences between 0.03 mil (P4f) and 0.05 mil (MSR reticle).

I do want to use the scope also at 5X and then the P4f sucks big time, especially at dusk. On a sunny range at 25X things are of course a bit different.

pretty sweet... seems like they borrowed alot of goods from other reticles? I think i see the gen 2 mildot illum cross detached from the rest of the lines, has mil and 1/2 mil lines instead of dots, a IOR-ish/hensoldt/dragunov type of quick ranging scale - for standing and prone? then, at least in the horus i had, the L for sizing/ranging... but i'm sure it is in other reticles too.

Actually it looks like a P4/P4F with the ranging scale moved up and right and the mil scale on the left side. Nothing really borrowed. Just some stuff added and moved.

I like the intermediate line thickness.

Man sized ranging in conjunction with a IPHY ranging bar/grid would be a nifty addition to the mil based reticle that foks can already range pretty well with.

Quick ranging scale is from 400 to 1300 meters -0.5 meter x 1 meter target. This equals 19.7" x 39", average shoulder width and crotch/top of head dimension.
I find those dimensions most useful as well since vegetation/terrain often hides legs.

Other scales I know are for mans average length, or like Russian (SVD scope) 1.5 or 0.5m <span style="font-weight: bold">tall</span> object. I find that anatomically silly, since average men´s length is around 1.78m in Europe. 0.5m works with shoulders alright, but rifle has to be on its side...

1.5m (59") might be for knees/top of head. Or for children.

I might be wrong -but as far as I know there isnt any other spotting or rifle optics with 0.1mrad scale. My Mark4 H-32 is 0.2mrad, as H-36 is.
Only exception I'm aware of is Finnish Army spotting scope, Zeiss Diascope 65. Our club has one, and I must say that it is excellent for milling- really. I believe similar scale will work in S&B 25X (in practice) just as fine.

Zeiss in pic, magnification fixed 30X. Ocular is not commercially available. "Targets" are at +1000meters.

Sirs,

Glad to see that most you share the same preferences regarding the major components of a sniper reticle than the Finnish snipers community does.


Here are some thoughts:

- main reticle most P4 users find too thick and P4Fine/GenXR users too thin. This is a matter of personal preference, but 0.05mrad line/0.6 heavy bars seemed like best combination of not too obscuring/dominating at 20-25x and usability at 5-8x powers.

- 0.1mrad L-shape milling scale. I personally, like many other shooters prefer spotting/shooting through same optics. So fundamental question was, why not enhance 25x powered scope with cutting edge milling scale? At the same time Finnish army adopted the new spotter reticle, so the design was obvious.

- man ranging scale. my team mate is expert in utilizing this type of scale also to more accurate ranging. It was kind of natural to add to reticle. Also make the FOV a bit more balanced feeling. as mentioned it "metric" and calibrated for 0.5meter wide and 1.0meter high target. (A specialist quickly notices that if you apply this scale to a say black bird target 0.25m high, one has to divide by four the ranged maters...)

- the 5mrad marking additions to the main reticle are a must addition for situations in which you must pin point a target to your spotter/shooter far away from certain commonly know target / point... Imagine a scenario: your spotter with mrad binos says "concealed target, 26mrads left, 2mrad low, from Alpha1, possible AK-47 sniper". With most traditional reticles without these aids, quite challenging to measure this without these aids.


Then some answers to the open questions

- reticle is available in the first phase only to 5-25x models. reason is that reticle glass itself needs to be re-dimensioned, tools made and printed in scope specific dimensions to own glass, so every scope model has the basic "sunk costs" with a new reticle.

- The MSR reticle is for now available only through FinnAccuracy but ways to effectively make it available world wide through SB standard distribution channel are being discussed.

MSR will be commercially available early 2011, provided that project schedule will not slip.

Check the original info page, linked to top of this thread I believe. MSR is a custom reticle designed a group of Finnish snipers for their use.

For those of us in the US, we really will not know anything until Finn Accuracy actually orders a run of these reticles. S&B has agreed to install them, but none have actually been ordered. Once that happens, then it will be an option available to us.

As soon as we are able to get these in the US, we plan to have them.

It's a well thought-out reticle design, congratulations to Finn Accuracy. Each leg of the central cross appears to be 0.5mr long, which "fixes" the issue with the P4F. I would like to see the reticle in person before commenting on the line thickness, I do like my P4F but don't use it below 10x. For military snipers, it's not difficult to see this is an excellent reticle, but I shoot smaller targets at long range.
