Muzzle Brakes poor form at the range?

I mean they’re already 2a, but I’d bet they only had foamys and incorrectly placed or AirPods. I literally see at least 4 customers with AirPods on the range daily.

Hell I have customers ask if the really need ear protection, they figure that out real quick.

Since I coyote hunt without ear pro and live in a prison state that doesn't allow suppressors, I've been using a titanium brake with a QD D size linear comp (4" Suppressor blast chamber with a chamber liner) to direct the noise away from me for the last couple of years.
The titanium muzzle brake works great by itself too.
I'm not affiliated with them, but I use this brand because they have many options and I could get all of the parts from one place.

Fortunately for me, I live in the wide open spaces of EO and all the ranges I have are friends ranges and private haha. I don't do public ranges for a good couple obvious reasons. First off I don't like most people, second most general public are idiots when it comes to shooting.

I’m really not a fan of brakes, though I do own a few rifles with brakes on them. I shoot suppressed whenever I can. I try not to shoot next to braked rifles. Unless the range rules specifically state “no muzzle brakes,” suck it up buttercup, guns are loud.

Range etiquette for me is;
Obey range rules and RSO instructions, even if you don’t agree with them.
Keep all your shit at your bench.
Police your brass and don’t leave the range a mess.
Don’t steal my brass.
Don’t talk to me. I’m wearing ear pro, and trying to shoot. If you want someone to talk to, go to the gym.

That being said I try to be courteous, my 300 win mag has a brake, and it cuts the recoil down an astounding amount, so I make it a point to only take it on days where I’m reasonably sure the range won’t be busy because being next to it is less than pleasant. I haven’t had anyone throw a fit if there is a few open lanes between us, and haven’t had anyone have an issue with my 308 braked ar’s, then again I go to a range in the country that isn’t filled with metrosexuals.

Blast diverters, or whatever you want to call them, do seem to work. I run on over the brake on my AR when not shooting suppressed and it cuts way back on the noise. For me and those around me.

I was shooting my Warbird, blue my cell phone off the table into a bucket of water! Didn't know it until I heard vibrating from a call , looked over, there's my phone. But again a break is nice for recoil if you're shooting a lot!

Oddly enough it doesn't even budge my Garmin Xero. My barrel is long enough that the blast radius just misses the front of it I think.

I’m the same way, for the same reason I don’t go to a stock car race and expect them to sound like Kia’s, we both seem to like the sound of gunfire unless it’s incoming. I live in the city, but I drive 70 miles out of my way passing at least 6 gun ranges to go to one in the middle of a rural county, the people are different in a good way and I hate just standing in a bay. I may look like an amateur but I like running up the tower or shooting from behind the old junk cars he has out there, and I can shoot what I like without having people look sideways, except for 50 cal now, I don’t have one but a guy who did was bouncing rounds up the 200 yard berm and setting fire to a tree.

Muzzle brakes are awful for everyone around, yeah I consider them bad form around others outside of competitions.
Of course it helps that we don't have retarded rules regarding suppressors here in Norway, you can just buy them over the counter, no paper bullshit.
Some ranges here straight up require you to run a suppressor.

My first time shooting at a PRS match I learned how powerful muzzle blast was from a brake when I was directly in line with the angle of the guys brake who was up shooting. I had no idea that much muzzle blast would hit that hard from 18 feet away. And that was a 6mm. It wasn't a bad experience, just eye opening to realize how much it can do from so far away. I had thought the distance from the shooter would have allowed the energy to dissipate to a wee puff of air. But now I know I was naiive. Then I sat down next to my dad while he was shooting a radial brake on a 338 win mag and that was a good time. I had to recompose myself after that one and it's not even a huge gun, or a very effective brake!

I get why people don't like it, but you didn't do anything wrong. I shoot brakes with good earpro and expect others to learn to do likewise if they are around random people shooting. Courteous but not a wussy is my mantra for life, if others don't feel that same way, they need to find their own place to shoot in public, which it seems the RO understood pretty well. You getting good earmuffs for your neighbors is a gentlemanly thing to do, but is above the mark of expectation IMO. In full transparency though, I have never been to a public range, where I live it doesn't work that way. Here you find some empty dirt and shoot there.

Last year when I was doing some load development on my 300NM I asked the RO if I could shoot at the bench couple of bays further down so I wouldn't piss off everyone. He was like nah, just fill up the next one on the range. I go on and set up, do my business. At the next cease fire, I could hear one of the old dudes complaining to the RO about how loud my gun was. He told the elderly gentleman that it's a gun range and guns will be loud and I wasn't breaking any rules. Couple of weeks later I was shooting at a different range and had a friend shoot a couple of rounds downrange. Yeah, the FB is one loud as brake and that was the last time it was shot with a brake... because my Gen 2 Ultra finally got approved!

Years ago I used brakes (NOT breaks ya dweebs) on a few rifles I had.
No matter how much they cost they actually do little to help with recoil.
If you are honest with yourself you will realize that all they do is make you fixate on the noise rather than the recoil.

Nowadays I know that since they do so little they are in reality of no use to me.
I'm now in a state that I am all fucked up with cancer, it's in my spine if you feel the need to know....and yet.
I shoot my 30-378 wooby w/o a brake.
I shoot my 470NE w/o a brake.
I shoot hot loads out of my 45-70 w/o a brake

Y'all be pussies if you HONESTLY think you need a brake.
You don't and are only hurting your shooting skills by using one.
There's this thing called recoil, and this other thing called flinching.
You need to train for those too.
You also need to train w/o any hearing protection......unless you think you'll have enough time to grab your earmuffs in the middle of the night when that burglar breaks in.
Shooting a 9mm or 45acp inside an enclosed room is ungodly loud if you've never done so, louder than any braked centerfire rifle out in open air.
Train for it.

Show me someone who can put 50-60 rounds down range of 338 or 300 magnums with out a brake and group as well as a guy with a brake the last 20 rounds.

Seen the brake on my 6.5 CM clear all empty casings off the bench that were left by another shooter. Some hit the side and bounced back hard enough to leave a bruise. Quite impressive I might add

In my IHMSA days, shooting at Jackson, MS (actually Bryan, MS), invariably, the fellow shooting next to me was shooting a 7BR or something larger with a brake. With a barrel less than 15 inches, the report was enough to rock me on the shooting stand. Shooting a 2 once trigger, from creedmoor makes the entire situation rather dicey. So, the solution, wait till he fires and then put my handgun on target and fire. Never had an issue. Just have to adapt and adjust.

I have a pretty low tolerance for bullshit, but if I can mitigate some of it, I'll give it a go. I went to the range today with extra ears and plugs. Not one person took them. I told a guy who sat down next to me that I was operating with a muzzle break and he stood back from the line like the thing was going to grab him by the head. That I found hilarious.

I told a guy who sat down next to me that I was operating with a muzzle break and he stood back from the line like the thing was going to grab him by the head. That I found hilarious.

I mentioned that I had a rifle with an obnoxious brake on it and that he might want to move over one bench so that I wouldn’t annoy him.

He declined until after the first three shots when I blew half his stuff off the bench. I apologized but told him that I had warned him. He moved over and left shortly after. It wasn’t my intention to drive him off, but I’m not surprised.

Now to be fair, today I did have the RSO pop two shots through my rig while I seated myself next to it, so I would know. I had forgotten to put on my glasses and my left eye kept winking involuntarily for about five seconds after his second shot. It was a pretty solid blast to say the least.

In general I'm of the opinion if you jump in a pool you are likely to get wet, and if you go to a gun range it's going to be loud. Prepare accordingly.

I do however try to be a good neighbor when I am shooting my braked 375 cheytac. It can be a tad much.

I did that. Bought a good suppressor that would work on my most fired rifles. Now I have three and am saving up for another. Yet I still run a brake on my PRS rifle.

I live in the free state of Georgia, so suppressors are OK. Right now our range goes to 500 yards and I shoot .223 and 17HMR pretty regularly. We persistently hear of plans to expand to 1K yards. When/If that happens, I`ll look for another gun in some form of 6mm. I`ll plan for a suppressor as a matter of course, as much for courtesy to my fellow club members as anything else. I know how much I`ve appreciated those members who shoot with cans currently.
