My experience with the new Barnes 112 grain match burner

I get a base to ogive of .688”.

Then a OAL of 1.323” if that matters to you.

@Matt_KJ I’m currently sitting at 38.8 grains of RL16. The average mv is 2994. I was pushing them at 3070 fps with 39.9 grains, but that was way too hot in my gun. Using ADG brass it came into pressure a lot sooner than published load data, but the speed is there.

What’s your COAL? Did you run a seating depth test?
I don’t have the COAL in front of me at the moment. But I know my CBTO is 2.145” and that’s .010 off lands with a .109 freebore. Haven’t done a seating test yet because it shot pretty well. But with my new slower charge I’ll be doing one to try to improve on it.

I shoot them in my 6xc. I love them. The advertised bc is very true for me. I had solid repeatable hits at 1440 with them this morning.
I’m glad you mention the part about the advertised BC being correct. I see a few other people on this thread stating a BC of 0.320 which made me scratch my head.
 
I tried with them Varget.

I couldn’t find any load data so I used the Sierra 110 SMK data however; my CBTO is 2.189”

Started at 33 Gr and went .2/.3 to 36.1 and found a nice velocity flat spot 35.6 and 35.8 with a MV of 2868. No pressure signs.

I’m considering keeping it going until I find pressure.

I’d like to revive this discussion with a terminal ballistics report. I shot a buck whitetail at 100 yards the other day with my 6 XC pushing 112’s at 2870. The buck was slightly quartering away and shot placement should have struck the on-side lung and quartered up from there. The buck went straight down, and expired very quickly.

The bullet vaporized both lungs, with only half of one left recognizable. It then sheared all the connections off of the top of the heart. The bullet in and out holes were both about 50 cent piece sized or bigger. The bullet exited the ribs, but not the hide. I’ve yet to skin it out to find the bullet, but I’ll update if I find it. It should be somewhere in the loose hide of the front armpit, but I can’t palpate it.

I was nervous to try the little gun, but wanted some firsthand research. The bullet performance was fantastic! I believe it hit ribs on the way in and way out, but seemed to hold together well enough to exit the rib cage but destroy everything inside.

I’d heard secondhand reports of cow elk being killed with these bullets, but I was skeptical. Has anyone else used them on big game?

I just find the appropriate sized drill bit and use it to ensure the hollow point is open all the way to the bottom of the meplat. Once in a while I find that they are plugged up and need some serious force to drill them open. Those become target bullets. I suspect that the horror stories of failures to expand are due in part to plugged hollow points. I definitely didn’t dream this method up on my own, but I’m happy to share it.

I shot a few matches with them, they did pretty good. Ended up getting clickers and heavy bolt lift after a few reloads due to a disagreement between my chamber and sizing die. Tried a known load with 105s same issue (clickers). I pulled that barrel and set it aside to investigate later, installed a new barrel and finished the season out with Bergers. The first load I tried hammered so never got back to the Barnes.

They are worth trying.

Don’t remember the exact powder charge but it was SW Precision @ 2800 FPS.

Those of yall with a 6 creed? Would yall be able to share your CBTO or COAL measurements for where you are seated, how far off the lands you are and then especially your chamber freebore if you know it? Or shit, all of that for any reamer if you know your freebore.

I am starting a new barrel and I can set a bullet in the case and press it in with just finger pressure so that its held by the case and close the bolt on it in the chamber and it doesnt touch the lands. I stick a 115 rdf in there like that and it hits waaay early like I would expect it to.

As such Im guessing in going to have to jump these bullets a fucking mile so Id like to have some others verify the measurements or to cross check and see if I have a funky bullet chamber mismatch with pvas standard reamer.

With finger pressure holding it the CBTO is 2.292 and COAL is 2.934

Don't worry about the lands seat them at book length an send them. But ill post my ogive measurements when I get home. Ill say I went from 10-60 tho off in 3 tho increments an they fell apart at distance until I seated them at book length

I mean... I am because I have to. Book length is 2.775 which coincidentally is what I came up with when seating them one caliber deep into the necks which comes out to 2.130 cbto.

Id still like to know though whether this bullet would be better suited to a shorter freebore chamber or if mines just fucked up.

2.131 is my base to ogive measurement. Load is 41.3 h4350 at 3034 fps. 26 inch proof prefit. I have ran this load the last 1000 rounds and its one hole at a 100 and proven to 1400. .320 bc
