Well recently I got a Ruger Precision in 308 but I also picked up a DPMS LR-308. I topped it with a Riton 6x24 scope. I found that scope in Ace Hardware of all places. This one is owned by people right here in Tucson, so I felt good about the quality and the price was right. Time will tell. I have been running only "surplus" 168 grain rounds but I am going to start handloading for it soon. I am hoping I can ring gongs with it at 1000 yards. I know my RPR in 338 will be for distances past that probably.

There are a few Ace's with FFL's, is the nice thing about individually owned stores. Harkens back to an earlier time in this country when the local hardware store was also a source of guns and ammo.

I live in SE Cochise Co. The altitudes up here are in the 4000-4500ft range, and 168's just may be capable of 1000yd in this area.

You never know until you try. I've got a 24" barrel gun (plus muzzle break) that holds them good at 850 - 900 yards. I'm at about 350' MSL. One of my new years' resolutions is to drive over to a neighbor who has a longer range and try them at 1,000.
