Well, I decided it was time to try out the whole "semi auto precision" thing again, and due to the overwhelming reviews of the MWS (combined with the fact that I was able to find one in stock,) I decided to give the LMT MWS a try.

Knowing how I am with "compromise," I did the smart thing (for me) and paid a bit extra to get the stainless 5r match barrel (this one is a 20",) as well as the new LM8 "slick side" model. The handguard is much slimmer and much more comfortable.

The dealer I bought it from had a Magpul ACS in stock, and swapped me for the Sopmod straight up. Good deal for him, because the Sopmod is more expensive, and good deal for me, because the Sopmod SUCKS for prone shooting and this saved me a step. I ended up with a bruise after shooting a buddies MWS prone, from the latch hitting my index finger.

I had a Geissele SSA-E waiting for th rifle, so I installed it last night. I was pleasantly surprised with the LMT trigger (it was decent,) BUT the Geissele does take it up to a new level.

Finally, I had a Schmidt 5-25 "just laying around," so I threw it in an OBR mount until I find a more suitable scope for this rifle (I'm thinking a Hensoldt 4-16FF would be the perfect scope for this setup.)

I haven't shot it yet, but I'm going to go out tomorrow and see what its capable of. Assuming it proves to be a "keeper," the barrel is getting sent to George at GAP to have a few inches hacked off and the muzzle rethreaded 18x1.5 for my SAS Ti Arbiter.

wow, now that is one sexy rifle. nice job so far. looking forward to your report. just an fyi, I have always found it takes a few rounds down the tube for the groups to settle down. looking good my friend.

Weird, I just checked my workbench area and sadly I dont have any zschmidt 5-25's laying around.

I have a full railer (so to speak) 16"CL with a 5-25 mounted and a PRS. It is a heavy beast but I intend it to be a stationary gun. It is performing very well. I've got just under 200 rounds and experienced some fail to feed hangups at the start (using 10 round ASC box mags). Those issues seem to have worked themselves out as I thought they would. I think the rifle wll get even better with more use though I am very happy with it right now.

not sure for everyone else, but with the 6 different precision AR's I have owned (all different makes and models),,,, it seems to me that groups really start to shine at about 500rounds plus and only get better after that..... Don't be let down if you're not getting crazy groups right out of the gate with a new factory barrel. Not sure if you want to call it a phenomenon or what, but I honestly think that groups get better and smaller the more you shoot a new rifle. My LMT was kind of the same way and especially until I found the ammo she likes to eat. AMAX all the way for my LMT. I can usually get 168amax 100count box for about $28 dolllars at my local dealer. You might get lucky right out of the gate, but from my past experience it is usually around 400 to 500 rounds to see consistant sub-moa groups at 100yards. I know my new rock river EOP really started to shine at about 400rounds. I just took it to the range last week and it is driving .52"moa ten shot groups at 300yards no problem and it wasn't doing that when I first got it. I've also found that load development plays a HUGE part in getting bug hole size groups also.

Good to know. That really is a lot though, I wouldn't expect a good stainless barrel to require much, if any break in period. Perhaps in your case it uas something to do with yours being a chrome barrel?

maybe with the CL, but I still see it in my SS barrel AR's also.... 400 to 500 might be conservative, but IMO you need to get some rounds down the tube to see consistent groups.

BM11, i'm sure you will love the LMT. I just loaded up these bad boys last night and I'm itching to hit the range myself when I get some free time.

varget powder (trying a new drop gr weight on this batch and will let you know how it goes as I'm shooting @ 300yards with this batch)

very very small kiss of a crimp, damn near nothing (I think I might be onto something with this very very light kiss of a crimp thing as I think it produces a more consistent tension on the bullet and better groups, I'm still working on this theory and will keep you informed).

want to say my ogive seat depth off the top of my head was 2.198 ish, damn near doesn't fit in the pmag.

get a nice rear sand bag and with your atlas bipod you'll be kicking some ass.... can't go wrong with the scope either (as you just happen to have it laying around In your basement, LOL, wish I had that problem).... can't wait to see your outcome bro. it is always fun shooting a new rifle.

I think my next rifle purchase is going to be a bolt gun, LOL, so we are both going in the opposite directions as I own nothing but precision semi-auto rigs. I'm thinking a savage LRP 260 bolt rifle with a vortex 5-20 scope. Still up in the air on this one tho as I'm in no rush.

Yeah, i have a good selection of bags, etc.

FWIW- the "spare" 5-25 was pulled off my Sako TRG-42. I have an Ashbury Saber Forsst Mod 1 chassis on order for it and sold the stock chassis, so the rifle is pulled apart (and useless) for the time being. Also waiting on a Form 4 for the TBAC 338BA to clear for that rifle.

It does buy me a little time to find a scope for this rifle, however.

I've been wanting one of these for a while now, but a lot of dinero for a semi-stock setup...( adding a geissele trigger and a PRS would add another $500 or). Plus, I don't understand why LMT does not build an integral trigger guard...? I will follow up with your range results to see how it shoots, I'm curious:cool:

That is a sweet looking rifle for sure. I hope it shoots! How does the weight of it compare to the GAP and the OBR you had? And me being my usual retarded self: does it have a switch block for a suppressor or will it run ok as is? Looking forward to seeing it, dobut Ill make it tomorrow though.

...and if you plan on taking the barrel off, which is fun to do, verify the tourque setting on the supplied wrench or toss it and get one you know will deliver the 140 inch pounds.

If LMT starts selling parts again the barrel bolts are $10 a piece. It may not be a bad idea to buy a few to have on hand.

If you snap one. It is not the end of the world.

Weight? I would say a bit heavier than my 16" OBR and quite a bit lighter than my 22" heavy straight taper GAP AR-10. About 10 pounds for the rifle plus optics, bipod, etc.

As for the gas system- no its not a switchblock. But it should run. Its rifle length which should make it a bit less sensitive, plus when I get it threaded it also is getting cut back, which will cut down the gas a bit and balance out the extra from the can (hopefully.)

No doubt, it will run with a can. Seen it, done it, even in full auto all the way down to the 13.5. (Full auto there for those worst case scenarios, obviously.) This is with the carbine gas system, not even the rifle length (18 and 20), all 16 and 13.5.

They come with an H3. I would only snag a heavy buffer spring if shooting with a can a lot. Clint from heavy buffers usually has them.

On the cost; I am not sure where you find a solid rifle with a monolithic upper, caliber and length flexible with all parts made and tested to a milstd, not commercial for less than OBR, GAP10, LWRC, KAC and LMT. (I'mm sure I am missing someone there.)

A PRS isn't really necessary for precision/dmr work. There has been success down range past 1k in the MWS configuration but with a 16 inch SS barrel. I guess it's what you like but bang for buck at a high level, hard to beat.

You are going to really like that rifle...I have a USOptics 1.8-10 TPal on mine and it is a great shooter...my best group is 7/16" five shot group with 7.62 175 grain FGMM. I prefer the Harris-Larue bipod set up and thinking about swapping out the SOPMOD stock for a Magpul PRS down the road...the LMT trigger is good, may upgrade later.

I originally started with 168 FGMM but tried the 175 on an whim, they were on sale at Academy and my groups tighten...so until I start rolling my own, 175's will be my choice ammo.

goddamn thats a nice setup. I was gonna hold out for a kac ecr but i think i may have to put an order in on the mws. stainless barrel, prs stock, surefire or aac brake plus the ability to switch barrels without a lot of trouble. This is my dream semi-308. Hopefully, she'll shoot lights out. Looking forward to more pics and reports.

They shoot everything great. Try the XBR powder. It made mine shoot even better than the varget. Mines likes all gr projectiles also (155,168,175). The new format here wont allow me to post pics (error).
