I've been shooting my .308 ALOT and I'm getting pretty good. In a few months I'm thinking I'll get something with some serious range. I'd love to have a .50 but the only way I can do that is if I get an AR upper chambered in .50 and put it on one of my registered AR's. Not to thrilled about that, but my fascination with the .50 leaves it as an option for me. I could also get an AR upper chambered in .416 or .510DTC and put it on any new lower without any registration problems. The problems with those is that ammo is hard to find and very expensive. My last option would be to get an AR 30 chambered in .338 Lapua Mag. What do you guys think?

Don't underestimate the 300 win mag and for sure the 338 Lapua.
A .50 for most is a novelty, not a serious LR rifle.

The cheytac rifles are out of my price range. I'm not underestimating the .338, that's why it's one of my options. Compared to the .5o, the .338 is expensive to shoot, at least around here. You can get .50 for around $3 a round, compared to $6 for the Lapua and $8 for the .416

Also, serious range needs serious accuracy. You're unlikely to get the results you want with any factory ammo. Reload, fine tune the load, save money and shoot better.

Unless you're planning on destroying hard targets, the .338 should serve you well. You really should consider reloading if you're going to get into these larger caliber rounds.

A 12 pound .338 Lapua Magnum rifle can wreak a lot of havoc at very long range. Secondly, I'd also go with a .300 Win Mag rifle if ammo price and availability were problematic.

Spending big bucks on a weapon system you might not be able to utilize, weather it be skill level or just the availability of range, is a common theme I see very often. So think about it hard before putting big bucks on it

The 300 WM was mentioned earlier...and for good reason. "jrob300" has hit at 1900 and had close misses at almost 2300 with the 300. If you are wanting to step into ELR it is the most affordable way to go. Like everyone else mentioned...start reloading. It's therapeutic, cost effective, and allows you to load for YOUR rifle.
However, if you want to jump head first into it...the thing to beat right now is the 375 CT.

Anyone with a cheytac reamer can make a rifle chambered for a cheytac cartridge. If you desire one of the rifles actually produced in house you can go to the website above. I would urge you to research some of the gunsmiths on the hide and ask one of them to do one up for you. There are other companies that make actions to handle those cartridges.

You could have any non semi automatic rifle chambered in another 50 caliber cartridge or any other cartridge for that matter. In a semi auto, you could have a semi auto rifle without the banned features (pistol grip, flash suppressor, collapsible stock, etc) or you could have a semi auto with those features and a bullet button and 10 rd. magazine.

A .300 Win Mag is quite capable at 1200. Heck even some hot loaded .260s, .243, etc...can be serviceable at 1200. And it won't cost you an arm and a leg to shoot these cartridges. I probably wouldn't even consider moving up to a .338 LM unless I'm going to go past 1400 yards and cost is a factor.

Skip anythi bigger than 338 and reload. You will never shoot if you are burning a 5 spot each pull of the trigger. Lot of local people on calguns.net would be more than happy to help you learn to reload for a few beers. Since you have a 454 already reloading should be a no brainer. The only factory ammo I shoot anymore is 22lr.

1200 is .300WM range. Hell, it's still .308 range if you can call wind.
I would NOT waste .50BMG ammo at that range unless you just want to put big holes in stuff.

Well hell, if that is the case you should be ordering the gun now.
The .50 really isn't that impressive unless you are taking out tanks or heavy armored vehicles. It's main purpose it to destroy anything in it's path, if you can hit it. When compared to your other caliber choices, the .50s accuracy sucks.

The AR ban and registration was separate from the 50 ban and registration, and in both cases the caliber is part of the registration (just checked my paperwork for my .223 AR and my 50-on-an-AR lower) and the wording is different on the papers. The code it references looks the same though so maybe they updated that, I'm not up on it which is why I'm asking.

I am with you BX1129 those .50's are not accurate at all. Lee's 5 shot group at 1,000 yards really sucks. I could do better with my .22
My .50 DTC with fireform loads and and pulled surplus projectiles will barely do .5 to .7 MOA
from a wood bench on saw horses at 190 yards. If you want accurate get a .30 carbine or something.
Tanda let me know if you want a Kali legal style .50 I can maybe send you in a good direction if you can't find anything. </div></div>

Well hell, if that is the case you should be ordering the gun now.
The .50 really isn't that impressive unless you are taking out tanks or heavy armored vehicles. It's main purpose it to destroy anything in it's path, if you can hit it. When compared to your other caliber choices, the .50s accuracy sucks. </div></div>

my vote is for the 300 win mag. i shot my 308 at 1k now but if u need something for the long way out there, i think the 300 win will fit the bill just right. its alot easier on ur pocket verses the 338 and so on. get into reloading ( single stage ), its a investment but worth every penny in the long run.

I think I will go with the Win Mag right now. Kind of wasting that expensive Lapua ammo at 1200 yards. There's no limitations on the Lapua here in Kalifornia, so I'll pick one up soon enough. Pretty excited to start shopping for a Win Mag, thanks guys.
