I have a tac65 and a innovative arms 30 cal can.

The tac65 is not "rated" for 17 hmr but I have heard of people shooting them through it with decent results and no damage. Anyone here tried it? Hate to render my can fubar over this.

Second option is having it threaded to 5/8x24 and using my 30 cal can. Only concern I have is the weight and length. The can is 24oz and 8.5" long. The host weapon would be a savage 93r17 TR.

Thanks in advance for any advice. Tried the search function and was not able to find what I was looking for.

Tac65, even if you could use it and it was rated for it, you would not be happy with the results. For that round you need more volume.

But, I have a question, have you bought the host already and, if not, are you planning on shooting more than 150 yards?

I've got a Gemtech .17HMR suppressor that works well, host is a Ruger 77/17 standard barrel. Before I got the Gemtech, I used my SWR Wolverine .223 can on it. Sounded ok behind the gun, fellow shooters said the .17 sounded louder than the .223 did with the same can on. Probably something to do with not enough gas being trapped.
Anyhoo, my vote is for the Gemtech. Also, if you haven't bought the host yet, Savage now has a threaded rimfire out.

Not yet. That is a whole different dilemma. See I am torn between the 22lr and 17 hmr TR's. The only thing that keeps me looking at the 22lr is the fact that I have the tac65. After 2 cans in one year "2010" I would rather not jump on another this quick. I did no research before buying my tac65, was an impulse buy after having one demonstrated. Had I known what I know now I would have gotten one rated for 22mag and no fragile bare aluminum K baffles.

Mostly 100yd stuff but want to shoot further if I could find a safe place to do so.

That is the best answer you could have given me. No .17 for you if you aren't going to a new can. You should get a good quality .22 and have fun.

When the time comes for the .17, well You will want a .17 Remington as the .17 hmr is a hard round to figure out. Not enough for groundhogs, too much for squirrels and not enough to get you out there. If your in 100 fine, but why bother?

Re: Need advice on suppressing 17 hmr

SWR Spectre is rated for .22, .22 Mag, .17 and 5.7
Mine is used on .22 though I have a .17 I don't know how quiet it would be with the speed of the .17 ammo. The .22 is pretty quiet and really quiet with subsonic. I haven't seen subsonic .17 and I'm sure it defetes the purpose of having one by running it with a can.
