Suppressors Need help/advice can't hit paper w/ suppressor on

I need some advice, which may include unfortunately scrapping out a suppressor.

My first suppressor a few years ago was a very modest priced Liberty "Black Raven" in .30cal. It did however shoot extremely well on a short barreled .308 using 175SMK's at about M118LR velocities.

I found a bunch of 155's on my shelf and thought I'd try them out in the short barrel. So anyway I had a baffle strike that wasn't catostrophic. I sent it back for repair twice and it won't hit the broad side of a barn since.

Out of frustration, I set it up in one of our wire edm machines(our business) and did a skim cut to see if there were any obstructions. I did not take off any new material, just a skim cut at the .377" dia that was there.

Now I can drop a .377" gage pin all the way through BUT...the gun will not hit paper at 100yds with the can on. Without, all holes are within a nickel or a quarter where I aim it.

WTF? I'm baffled.

Unfortunately I am of no help to you on this one as to how to fix it. I could make stuff up as to what to try, but I'm thinking just don't use that suppressor.

Most mfrs can (pun intended) take back their suppressors for repair or replacement within some warranty guidelines. For example, SRT guarantees their cans for life, provided they do the barrel threading. Other companies, for a nominal charge may open the can and/or rebuild it for you. That baffle strike may have left a large burr you can't see or burn out with the EDM and the pressure differential is destabilizing the bullet. That's another issue, bullet weight vs. rate of twist of your rifle (I don't know enough about this to wax eloquent on the subject).

Is Liberty still in business?

Edit: I found this on a reseller site for them: "All of Liberty suppressors come with a lifetime warranty, excluding the use of full auto fire which can melt the aluminium components in the suppressor."

That was from a .30 cal can designed for AR10s. Aluminum? What's SAAMI spec on 7.62 WIN? 56k psi?

My conception of Liberty was that they are a good company more than willing to do what they can to make things right.

It seems like this is about time to give the customer a new can.

Of course trouble shooting can overlook something sometimes. If your bore is .377 that shouldn't be effecting .308 bullet flight at all.

When the baffle strike occurred it is possible that the rear cap got deformed even slightly out of square. If that happens, the bullet will follow the bore (especially in a baffle system like Liberty- where there are MANY baffle surfaces close together). So your bore might be CONCENTRIC and round with the OD- but the mount may not be Perpendicular to the bore.

Put it on a lathe if you have a lathe you know to have a spindle/chuck jaws that run in parallel within .003" at 8-10" and clean this surface up. Then check alignment on your barrel when it's done to see if your barrel thread or something to do with the way the parts mate up isn't contributing.

That sure sucks, Tom. Usually Liberty has pretty good service from what I understand. Have you had an open and honest conversation with David over there about this?

So you just have a larger poi shift? Where IS it hitting? How does it group at the new POI? The skimcut might become a warranty issue, but I don't blame you for trying it.

Sounds as if you work in a macine shop.
Take the barrell and chuck it up in a lathe with about 6 inches of barrell exposed. Indicate it to determine there is no runout and then attach the suppressor and see, as GA mentioned, if there in any excessive runout on the suppressor.

Get bigger paper or bring it in closer. Without knowing what the bullet is doing kind of hard to diagnose.

If the point of aim is offset but group size is good that is normal 8" of deflection at 100yds would not surprise me.

If the shot group size is not good with the silencer on that bullets are bouncing off the silencer either due to misalignment with the bore or an internal problem with the silencer.

Mount the silencer and look through the bore, if you can see the silencer at all when looking through the bore straignt on than that is where your bullet is hitting.

If it's striking the baffles/silencer you'll probably notice the bullets look like they are hitting the paper sideways. So like everyone else said, bring the paper in closer.
