I really want to get started in the security field and work my way into armed security (that's cliff notes of my entire plan). After looking into it, it seems like it should be so simple to get gaurd cards... however I have no idea where or who to start with as far as courses go. Anyone have any experience or advice?

First and foremost, looking for a DCJS class that is unarmed and armed. Down here it is a one week class (40hrs) and my friend paid like $140. That should get you qualified for the most part so companies can start looking into you.

I'd look into Commonwealth Criminal Justice Academy. They're right in Fredericksburg. Shoot them an email. He can answer all your questions I'm sure.

I was a Blackwater Contractor for Iraq and Afghanistan. Great pay, high risk.

Best way to get in the door is by being one of the following:

SEAL
Delta Force
Army Special Forces
Recon Marine
Army Ranger (combat duty with Ranger Battalian)
Air Force Pararescue
Air Force CCT

Must have combat experience (if you want the best chance of getting in).

All others; take a number and Blackwater/Xe, Triple Canopy, etc. will call you if they need you.

I agree with you, but i dont think he wants exactly that route, i think he wants a domestic suit/tie PSD gig. which still requires a more advanced tarining than justa armed/unar,ed security guard course.. look into ESI specifically, or any of the contractor companies will have courses available for civilians

That may be true, but in the state of Virginia, everyone has to go through that armed/unarmed course if they want to work in state last time I checked.

suit/tie psd gig yes, if i had miltary experience then blackwater or the like would be my choice... but it's not.

Look at this course outline, in order to get started in VA and the DC area you need to take this course its The 32 E PPS agent course. Then you can take the armed and unarmed courses to move you along in the Security field

EDIT : Here is the link to the State of VA DCJS page that shows entry level and inservice training http://www.dcjs.virginia.gov/pss/training/outlines/index.cfm

Blackwater used to offer this course as well.

Re: Need help getting started in security (VA)

Yes, the 32 E will let you get started in personal security as an unarmed PPS Without that course and the certification, you would not be licensed to perform any PPS security duties in the VA and DC area.
I believe the course is about $1800

Here is a company that hires security in Northern Va http://www.blackicesecurity.com/
I would contact them or
Tom Perroni at http://www.ccjatraining.com/index.htm
