My father and I are about to purchase around 40 acres of hunting land in the middle of Wisconsin. We are planning on putting up a cabin and some hunting posts. We came up with the idea of putting up a private range as well. I would like to shoot from 10 yards to 500 yards. I want it to be organized and I want it to look nice. I am wondering how to do it. All I know is that I will need a dirt mound to stop bullets. If there is anyone that has built their own range, any advice would be great. Also if anyone has any pictures of their ranges that would be great as well. Thanks for all the help.

Research the NRA's home website. They offer good advice at the very least and it's a good place to start your research.

Employing wooden baffling at the firing point to limit the directions in which projectiles can fly is a good safety approach. If an inquiry ever gets started, it demonstrates a proactive approach to safety and nuisance control, two very big issues where rifle ranges are concerned.

Some form of acoustic baffling/shielding/muffling (NOT silencers) will go a long way toward curtailing neighbor complaints, and besides, it never hurts to keep a good relationship with those neighbors. A proactive approach to nuisance control takes a lot of wind out of an anti's sails.

Impact berms can be mined occasionally for lead, etc. Providing/demonstrating a means/capability to do this (designing the berm so it can be mined more easily) can also help to preempt efforts to impose EPA lead issue restrictions on your range. They're coming, and complacency is a certain way to ensure they can screw up your day.

If I can get a picture of the bullet catch here on base I will see if I can post it but it is made with railroad ties and it kicks ass. Simple but VERY effective. One of those "Why didn't I think of that?"
