#1 thing- you're going to have a thought that goes something like this...
"What would make this community, town, etc better is if..."
Keep that 💯 to yourself. No one wants you to change a single minute moment of the way they live their lives, see their lives, what they have, what they don't have, and they don't want your opinion about it.
Once thats mastered, you're a good neighbor.

To put it into perspective: Do you repulse at the thought of having to hear that leftist, anti-gun, scrawny fag, David Hogg every time he gets up to a microphone to spew his communist bullshit? THAT is how we (locally to me) view every damn homo that moves up from the DFW area and starts a conversation with " Well, in Texas we...".

Just be nice, courteous, wave at everyone driving the opposite way, and be willing to engage in a conversation at every chance. If they hate the democrats (95% chance), side with them and give them that assurance that you aren't trying to change their way of life. If you see something illegal, shut your mouth too if it isn't affecting you.

You can even slip in your questions here to your neighbors after a warm welcome. I'd bet that if they like you they'll not only show you the local tricks to success, but they might even loan you the equipment to get it done if they have the means.

We are very much a community. Doesn't matter what your background is. You want to be 'in the circle of trust', not outside.

This. 100%. In small/rural communities most everything operates on trust and it determines relationships. Full stop. This is why people ask about who your people are and why you are there and your background - it’s an assessment that will hit the airwaves faster than you think. It’s not rude, the best way to describe it is a low-key security action all small towns have. The second stage of that is who you associate with and how you act.

It takes a while to be trusted fully in a small community and there is good reason for it. If you get the thumbs down early on good luck in ever fully fitting in. Remember, you are trying to fit into their community, not fit the community into your desires. Get that wrong and you will be rejected. Humility is key.

My wife and I went over and introduced ourselves to our closest neighbor over the weekend. Nice guy. He is building his own house with his own two hands... by himself. 🇺🇸

I've passed by the neighbor two parcels down a few times on the dirt road... usually drives FAST with no apparent regard for potential hazards... rest of the neighbors are slow and courteous. We typically yield to one another, but not this gal: she just flies on by.

Lots of coyotes not long after dark. A 300BO may be in my near future.
"Officially" there are mountain lions in the area; however, I'd imagine its very few of them.
Other critters include javelina and bobcats.

Looks like my first project will be to level out a section of dirt to build a foundation for a shed...
My plan is to measure the boundaries and mark them, then use a shovel to move dirt, and a bubble level to verify flatness. Add gravel, mash it down flat and check that its level. Then set up blocks in the shape of the shed, and recheck for levelness.
