After Lurking the forum for a while I decided to Finally give something back for all i learned. After reading Top PRedators Low budget trainer posts Many times I decided I would give it a try, However I did not see a reason for my rifle to be as "Tacticool" as his but to be inexpensive, simple, and gets the job done. This was a very simple one day build as I was on a budget. (I'm saving up to customize my Rem 700).
To start I bought a Mossberg 702 Plinkster. I chose it over the Ruger 10/22 because of the 100 dollar price gap between the two.
The 702 is a Nice little gun, very light weight but doesnot have the aftermarket options of the 10/22.
My next step was removing the action from the base and installing an Uncle Mike's sting stud kit. This was a simple step.
I then installed my bipod for a test fit. The bipod is made by Caldwell and is a clone of the harris bipod.
I then sanded the joint where the stock was sanded to a smooth finish. the free floated barrel was ok so i didnot alter that at all.
I then reinstalled the action to the stock and tested for clean operation.
I then leveled the gun and attached my scope rings. The Manufacturer is unknown as they were from an old rifle I sold.
I then installed my scope. it is an inexpensive BSA 3-9x50 scope i picked it up for around 65.00 reflecting on that i should have gone with the tasco 3-9x40 mil-dot i was looking at. I know the scope is not the best but for an inexpensive build i wasnt going to put a scope that cost more than the gun itself.
All I have left to do is to get a sling for it and some extra mags.
This build ran me approx: $220.00 only 10more dollars than the ruger 10/22 was selling for Stock!!
IN the case with it is my old J.C. Higgins 22LR, it was bought back in the 50's by my greatgrandfather for my granddad when he was a teenager and it was then passed onto me. I admit I had the erge to customise this one but I decided to keep it all original and keep the tradition going with my kids.
