I was tired of heavy rifles so I asked aka-Spook to make me a lighter tactical rifle. Spook built me a 300 Whisper on a Howa action that shot very well so I asked him if he could build me a 260 on a Howa action. He said sure thing . I had him true the action and chamber and fit a Krieger varmint profile barrel with a Badger Thruster brake. I told him I wanted a min spec chamber to match my other 260. He had me send a dummy round to get a custom reamer made. When I got the barreled action I skim bedded it into a B&C Howa varmint stock. The stock had already been sent to Jeff at CDI for his excellant bottom metal. You will also see a bolt knob that I got from the boy who is selling them for $15 here at SH. It was a pain milling and threading the bolt handle but finally got it threaded. I am sending it off to be 'nitrided' later so I just screwed it on for now. I broke in the barrel according to Krieger. It fouled badly until rd 6. Cleaned between groups and chronographed rds. The 1st rd was always out of the group. 3 rd group- .62. 5 rd - .54, .425 ( 1 rd lost focus on crosshairs ), .46 . This is discounting first rd of each group, which I plotted on paper that was always .3-.7 outside the rest of the group. These were loads that were shooting about .45 out of my other 260 Rem rifle. It was a little windy and I am not really a benchrest shooter . I am sure this will be one of my most accurate rifles. I also noted that velocity jumped 27 f/s on the final 5 shot group and SD dropped to 4 from 9 for previous groups. To me this is the sign of a broken in barrel.
My shooting partner will post pictures in about 4 hrs when he gets off work. I wanted to thank Aka Spook for doing a great job and to give a thumbs up for CDI and the boy who did the bolt knob. Only problem I had was I had to run a tap into the bolt knob because threads were a little rough. By the way rifle weighs 10 lbs with 26" barrel, brake, and empty mag. 12lbs with scope and rings.

8" twist. Haven't worked up load for this rifle. I just used load from my other 260. Rem brass, Fed 210 M primers, H4350 42.5 and 42.2 grs (different lots of powder- required .3 change in powder weight), Lapua 144 fmjbt loaded .019 off riflings- approx 2.770 oal.
I have 3 Xotic scopes. Only bought 1 of them new.

Re: New 260 Rem from AKA Spook

Does the B&C varmint stock have a full-length aluminum bedding block like the Medalist A2? That is a nice inlet job done by CDI, I've been wanting to see a good pic of how the CDI DBM looked in different stock since I'm in the process of choosing a stock for my new Howa 308.

How is that Alpha Morta Mag working for you? Did you get the Type 1 or Type 2? Did you have to modify the action at all to use that mag?

Sorry for the line of questions. I am super excited to get my Howa build going so anxious to get as much info on options as I can.

Beautiful rifle!

SoCalPete,
The B&C varmint stock has the full length aluminum bedding block. I only use the Morta mags with the front spacers as all my rds are loaded 2.840 oal or shorter ( Type 1, I think ). The front bottom of the action (toward recoil lug on bottom of action) needs about 1/8" wide x 1/8" deep removed for mag to properly seat. I am pretty fair on a mill but this job really needs someone good with a dremel. My shooting partner did it in about 20 minutes . If I had known, I would of had Jeff at CDI do it ( $60 - I think) before I would have tried doing it myself. I skim bedded the rifle and bedded the first 1 1/2" of the barrel. I had to sand the barrel channel in 2 spots but I used a different barrel contour.

Re: New 260 Rem from AKA Spook

Thanks David!

I spoke to Jeff (CDI) briefly over PM about the amount of work that would be needed on the action (if any) to make it work with his DBM and AICS mags, but it seems the Morta mag Type I would need a bit more... I could only imagine how much more work the Type II would require.

Thanks for the info! Again, great build! I hope my Howa will perform when it is finished.

Here is the rifle after new nitride treatment. It looks very good - nice matte black finish .
She feeds great from the CDI bottom metal with the MORTA mag . I'll try to post pictures of targets later . I had to add material under stock pack and move scope forward 1 notch to shoot it from prone so groups weren't good enough to take pictures of !! I really like this setup . AKA-SPOOK, Robert (RWS Gunsmithing), Jeff at CDI all did a great job ! I had my shooting partner coat the bolt shroud and bolt knob for me . I could have done it but it wouldn't have looked as good .

Re: New 260 Rem from AKA Spook

Just got back from the range . It was very windy but last 3 groups prone off bipod : .423 , .400 and .75 (.403/ 4 rds- threw one !). My shooting partner dropped by with his 30 cal can . Group was 2.25" low and .25" right, around .6" group . The 260 was actually quieter than the 308 . I really like this rifle .

Re: New 260 Rem from AKA Spook

al redneck,

I just had Jeff @ CDI inlet my B&C Tactical stock for his DBM. Right now the mag is not feeding well and I am in dialog with Jeff on these issues.

Would you mind posting, or sending me some pictures where you modified the action, and also what the inside of the action looks like with a loaded mag inside? I'd like to see the relationship of the bullet nose to the feed ramp to see how much material I may need to remove from the action.

thanks much!

Re: New 260 Rem from AKA Spook

SoCalPete,
I have stated many times that I am not good with computers and sending pictures but I can tell you what I had to do to get reliable feeding with my CDI bottom metal and MORTA mags . I scribed a line for the outline of where the mag mates to the action and then had my shooting partner use his dremel to remove metal from the bottom of the action until flush with milled out section on the action . The bolt would still override the base of the rounds unless I put pressure on the bottom of the mag while working the bolt . I contacted Jeff at CDI and requested a longer mag release lever . In a few weeks he sent me 2 levers . I installed one and feeding was perfect . I can ask my friend to stop by to take pictures but it could be awhile before he has time to do it .

Re: New 260 Rem from AKA Spook

Thanks much, I also had the problem of the mag not high enough to feed the rounds correctly so I spoke to Jeff about it. Then he informed me that there are two holes in the latch so I moved it the latch higher up. Even with the mag higher, it was still not high enough so I had to relief the contact points on the action to allow the mag to move even higher up. After the mods, everything works as it should now.
