I'm about to build another rifle, and have everything I need so far, except for the gunsmith fees...should have that shortly. I'm building a 6.5mm rifle and so far I have a 8.5 twist 26" Bartlein blank, a Rem700 SA, and a McRee chassis.

I was going to go ahead and have this built as either a CM or .260 Rem etc., but now I'm thinking I might want to start over and really make myself a nice rifle. I already own a nice .308 with a Bartlein in a McMillan that was accurized/blueprinted on a Rem700 SA. I wanted two rifles...but now I'm thinking, should I own two moderate, kinda good rifles, or should I sell the .308 and put the money towards a really nice rifle.

Here's what's going through my head if money was no object (I'll have to sell the .308 to afford a nice rifle)

Surgeon or Big Horn SA
Bartlein 8.5 twist M40 contour SS blank at finished at 26" in either CM or .260
SAS brake and Ti Arbiter suppressor (already pending)
McRee Chassis
Spuhr 20MOA 34mm mount
Leupold Mark VI 3-18

So since I cannot afford to buy a good action and pay a gunsmith, should I spend the dough and sell my .308, or keep my stock Rem700 action and my .308?

Can one really shoot the difference between a custom action and a stock Rem that's been accurized? I've never been behind a rifle with a custom action so I really don't know.

I really want to start competing in comps and am leaning towards having a damn fine rifle, but I like having two too!

Or....should I just buy one already built, like a GAP or....?

Thanks for any help!

Sounds like you had a nice build going to start. Not sure how much more accuracy you are going to wring out of it going to more robust parts with the 6.5 caliber. Or why not just rebarrel your .308 with you 6.5 barrel? That being said, if you want a dream rifle, build it.
