New GAP-10 Rail design. prototype's in!

That's pretty sweet. Anybody know of any other custom rifle-builders opening up their design process to potential and existing customers...with a progressive evolution of the product in Solid Works?

I noticed what you did with the rails blending into the hgandguard at the proximal roots too. That addresses the feedback about sharp edges when using the support hand up near that area-a nice touch from a true 21st Century Craftsman who builds swords for discerning wielders of the long blade.

Plus 1 to that statement. Big GAP-10 plus for letting us all get our input on the design. That means a lot to me and I'm sure everyone else here on SH. Very cool. I would love to have a GAP 10 in a 6creed if I wasn't already invested into a LMT MWS.

Just a final note on the handrail texture... nice texture, but not too aggressive to the point it takes off your skin. Looking good so far.

#3 is my favorite as well. Glad to see that's the one you're running with. I've been itching to get another AR-10 since I don't have one in the line-up right now. Flirted with several POF, nearly ordered a JP, but always had GAP-10 on the mind. This will officially put me over the top. I will be ordering a GAP-10.

I have been considering a GAP-10 or a JP in the near future. Think this just made me stick with GAP.

As others have said, I prefer #3 (#2 isn't bad either) and thanks George for letting us provide feedback and input. So many people were throwing various suggestions out early in the thread that I was expecting George to say screw it and do whatever he felt like to begin with...

Has anyone seen a GAP 10 with a continuous top rail and a bottom full length rail? My buddy just got one and was not expecting the rail to take the entire 6 o clock position and a continuous 12 o clock rail

It's a GAP 10 through and through. image.jpg

Some of the POF rails/handguards are identical to the one pictured/linked in your above post with the full-length, non-relief cut for optics top rail and longer 6 o'clock rail. There have been SEVERAL different generations of rails/handguards since POF intro'd the P-308 (upon which the GAP-10 platform is based), as well as different ones from Hogan, so it is possible that one of those rails was used on your buddy's rifle. Out of curiosity, is it a GAP-10 marked receiver or a POF P-308 marked one (I couldn't make out the roll mark when I blew the pic up to full size)? If built off a complete POF rifle and converted/upgraded to a GAP-10, it would make sense to have that rail/handguard setup. Here's a pic of a like-equipped P-308.

It is stamped GAP 10. It's not a POF built GAP

If its that big a concern, have him contact Ken at GAP and inquire about the issue. You also might want to have him check to ensure that it is REALLY a solid rail top and bottom and not just an M-rail ("M"odular) with removable/adaptable rail sections that can be added/used to fill the top rail relief for lowering optics, as well as adding addition rearward rail space to the bottom, 6 o'clock rail. Modular Rail Should be easy enough to spot.

I don't know the specifics, but because of the POF/Hogan litigation, George posted recently about the necessity of changing the GAP-10's handguard design (i.e. - the subject of this very thread). ;) It is possible that GAP had to switch to this design as a stop-gap until the new rails are up and running, but I honestly have no idea what the issue might be. Best to go straight to the horse's mouth with his/your concerns though! ;)

ORD that's the first thing I thought when he showed me the rifle but it is indeed a solid rail. He is planning on calling Ken. I was just curious because neither he nor I had ever seen the full rail on top and bottom.

Didn't Rob or one of the Team Blaster guys request a different handguard on their's back in the earlier days?

Hogan makes (made) two different rails. That one has the full rail rather than the "hunter" rail.

I could have speced mine like that, I would guess it was built that way per customer order.

Also, supposedly the rails were the holdup earlier this year, if it came out then maybe they built it with the full rail due to availability?

I just weighed my 18" (including brake) with a PRS, no mag, atlas bipods and an empty scope mount and it weighed 11.8. That's as close I can get to a 20" because that's what I have. Hope it gives you a good ballpark idea.

thank you. I was a little worried about it weighing 15+ pounds once I seen how heavy duty the parts were. I am calling tomorrow to place an order; hopefully I'll see my gun by middle of next spring.

My 18" with an A2 stock weighs over 14 pounds with a 28oz scope, bipod, and loaded mag.

I'm betting a 20" with a PRS will weigh 15 pounds plus fully loaded.

ETA: I was quoted a MUCH lighter weight when I asked.

New guards are approved, in production now. Will have 100 sets of parts including new guards in the next 2-3 weeks. So unless yours in assembled and getting ready to ship in the next 2-3 weeks yours will have the new guard.
