New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

So is it the low psi that is giving the ultra long barrel life? Or is there a something else in how GA is putting them together?

What are these critter going to cost a guy?

Yes, the lower pressure helps with barrel life.

If you want prices call GAP and ask for a quote. Depending on your options the price can fluctuate a bit.

Three steps in case prep, Neck down with a .295 bushing. Pull back through a .264 expander same step, Turn neck to .013-.015 thickness (removes any runout from sizing down) . Size with .290 bushing and trim to 2.025 (2.035 max)

Copper Creek Cartridge is prepping brass for sale as well as loaded ammo.

Is this in a 7 rsaum neck die or are they making 6.5 saum dies? Thx.

A 7mm SAUM can drive a 162 or 168 gr to those MVs or pretty darn close, with H-1000. The 162 and 168 basically match the BCs on the 140gr 6.5mm, so what makes the 6.5mm SAUM so revolutionary? Is it that the 6.5mm SAUM can achieve those MVs with much lower pressures than the 7SAUM, thereby improving barrel and brass life? Trying to understand the rationale. Thanks. Very interesting stuff.

Exactly, the 130 Berger pointed has a BC of .600, the 140 JLK has a BC of .670 pointed, which is basicly where the 7mm 180's are. you can launch the 140's at 3300 out of the SAUM, at these pressures the barrel wont last long. So agin keep in mind the goal was to keep pressures at under 58,000 PSI So far of all the different combo's ive used there is one that sticks out.

130 Berger Hunting VLD Pointed BC of .600 63 grains H1000 COAL of 2.900 yeilds 3180-3200 fps and 55,000 psi from the 24" barrel on the XTREME Hunter. Its 3250 out of my 26" Match rifle. This puts is at 5.8 mils to 1000 Yards at 1500 ft DA. With extremely low recoil.

7mm WSM will come close to the same but at much higher pressure, with lower barrel life and alot more recoil.

Pointing a 130 Berger improves its BC by nearly 8%?

WOW...

they always seem to improve the BC by 6-10%, Im super confident in the .600 BC for the 130 Hunter VLD as I spent 2 days in Montana with chrono and monitoring the DA to come up with that number. I was shooting it at 1000- 1250-1500- 1 Mile- and 2000 and those numbers were spot on. .600 BC is a solid # for the 130 Berger Pointed.

Im sure the next question is will the 130 Hunting VLD pointed still Kill effectively??? I shot an elk at 300 Meters (double lung) the exit was about the size of a peach, a little bigger than a golf ball. so it definitely expanded. I shot a Mule deer at about 60 feet and it did not even exit, the mule deer crashed 15 ft from when it was standing. The lungs and heart looked like a small grenade went off inside the deer. So again they definitely still expand when pointed. a two bullet test is probably not the best but after this season I will be able to report with even more certainty on this.

A few critters I've seen taken with 130gr Berger Hunting VLD's

Looks like a really good round wonder what it could do with a 30" palma barrel. Also with all these pics of hunting rifles does anyone know if george has done one or will do one if more of a tactical rifle? Or will he do the reamer in whatever u want? Wouldn't mind getting a barrel made in this caliber for my Badger

The rifles look pretty tactical to me...I mean they're being used the same way.

I do not doubt those 6.5mm BCs are possible with pointing. I'm pointing 6.5mm and 7mm bullets and getting similar percentage increases.

Of course, you can point the 7mm 180gr Hybrid as well, and that takes her to close to 0.73, so its back out in front on BC wise. And at 1500+yds, it sure is nice to have a bit more mass on the bullet for splash/impact observation. Yes, the 6.5 SAUM is flatter given the MV differences, but windage goes the 7mm.

I have a 7 SAUM and sure like the cartridge. Very well designed all around, better than the 7 WSM despite a tad less boiler room. Maybe once I burn out my 7 SAUM, I will look into your 6.5 SAUM. My 7 SAUM is built on a short-action, and the much shorter 6.5mm bullets are certainly a nice advantage for short-actions.

Thanks for all the great photos!

You beat me to it. That was the last question that I had. Thanks for the information, very impressive little pea shooter.

Ok, who wants to buy my first born, or a spare kidney?? Anyone?? Anyone??

I Have shot a 7mm WSM for as long as the cartridge has been out, in a 24" barrel you wont get but 2850 FPS with the 7mm SAUM the recoil is much greater. And you run into OAL problem with these bullets in the SAUM Case in a Short action.

There are many that can blow this cartridge/rifle away in a longer action and a longer barrel or shooting single shot in a short action, but none will compare within the guidelines of this project.

24" barrel
9 pounds or under with scope and sling and mag
short action
low recoil
keep at 58,000 PSI or less
at or under 6 mils to 1000
1000 ft lbs energy left at 1000 Yards

Hmmm.... That rifle and cartridge is just "Tits"!!
Does PTG make the reamer for it? I'm really liking the idea of a 6.5 saum with a McMillan Game Scout stock.
This would make a great new "go-to" gun to replace my 270, It's too purty to scratch anyway.

You dont need the 30" barrel for this caliber to shine. I'm running 26.5" barrels in a more tactical style rifle and the performance is amazing. One of them is a WSM Badger action and it is by far one of my favorite rifles to shoot.

George
I see the barrel twist you used is @ 8.7
Would an 8 twist work just as well with the 130's at those velocities,
Or is there a specific reason for the 8.7 twist?

for these velocity's we could have probably gone 1-9 but we used 1-8.7 so in case you were sheep hunting at 10,000 feet you could still Stabilize the 140's, A 1-8 will work fine might just be a little slower with the same powder charge.

Wouldn't the decreased air density at 10k feet ASL make it easier to stabilize the bullet?

Well I got sucked in before and built a 6mm Crusader, just bought 4 bags of brass, getting a barrel ordered and a ptg bolt for my spare gun so I can swap barrels. Also just bought some 160 matrix vld's. still deciding if I will go with a 1-8 or 1-7.75 barrel but either way, super excited. Now the freaking wait time for all the parts to show up to Canada.

George, any chance we can take a look at the reamer print. Very interesting cartridge indeed........

What sort of OAL are you seating too with certain bullets? Scenar 139g?

If brass is made for this, I think you've got an interesting cross the course cartridge out to 1K.
