I have a brand-new remington 700 in .338 LM. I am runnung through the break-in process, and the bolt sticks sometimes after firing. The problem is occuring less and less as the break-in proceeds, I was wondering if this is a typical problem with new bolt guns and what can I do about it.
Thanks all

Re: New gun problem?

Typical? No.

Have you lubed the bolt lugs?

How's the brass look? Any signs of pressure? Any scratches along the body? If the answer to both of those is no I would suspect its parts wearing in and not worry too much about it. If it shows pressure change loads. If the brass has scratches clean the chamber and try again, if still present contact Remington.

Re: New gun problem?

The brass shows no scratches, and the problem seems to be resolving itself the more the weapon is shot. The loads are factory Hornady 250gr BTHP's.

Re: New gun problem?

Definitely should not be doing it if it was cleaned properly first and lubed correctly. Keep a close eye on it if you feel comfortable with it! If not make Remington look at it.

Re: New gun problem?

Interesting...I inherited my grandpa's 03A3 and started having the same problem after firing <100 rounds. I've cleaned the chamber & bore really good, and also lubed the bolt, bolt lugs, etc. Could this be a potential excessive head space issue? My ammo is CMP Lake City military surplus.

Re: New gun problem?

The ammo turned out to be the problem. The brass was getting stuck and there was a curious yellow band around the exact center of the cartridge. I'm wondering if the brass was the problem because it is only on my HSM brand brass that the cartridges are getting stuck, not my Lapua or Hornady brand stuff.
