Hello,

New guy here. Bought me a Colt AR15 earlier this year. Then about a month ago, I went out to a sniper range in New Mexico. The guy running the range had me at a 3" grouping at 950. This made me want to start seeing what my AR is capable of doing. First, I am wanting a scope that is capable of 500+ yards. Second, I do not want to spend a bunch of money on this scope. I do understand that the more the investment, the better results. It's just right now is not the time to dump the funds into a scope. I am asking for some assistance from the experts her for some advice. Thanks again for having me and look forward to meeting some of you.

That's called a "fluke" and it is unrepeatable. </div></div>

Nonsense, he did say he went to a sniper range

Re: New guy with a question

Ya can't really blame the OP, if he's a new shooter and really didn't know what to expect and you had a "professional" at a "Sniper Range" tell you how you did then most would believe whatever they tell him.

New shooters really don't know what to expect, they see it done on TV and at the movies all the time. They probably have a gun shop at that range and are building him up for a sale and then some training.

The previous responses are fitting and cute and I wish I could find one to post as well but at least he's wanting to start shooting and probably had no idea what realistic expectations to have but next trip out I'm sure his eyes will be opened.

Welcome to the Hide, enjoy your new gun and cherish that first time out at that range and memorize his words about how good a group you and your new gun shot. Not being cruel but chances of it every happening again with that gun are slim to none. You'll get better guns suited to this LR shooting, your skills will improve and you'll meet others that will help you along the path. Don't take the criticism to hard, most on here have been doing this a long time and know what is realistic and what is not.

Re: New guy with a question

I'm thinking he meant the guy who ran the range shot that 3" at 950 group and not the OP with his AR. Now onto answering the question at hand. Use that AR for what it was intended throw a 1-6 on it and have fun. If you want to shoot LR save up learn more by reading on this forum and build a dedicated LR rifle.

Re: New guy with a question

I must appologize. I wasn't shooting my AR. I was using his .308 Canadian sniper riffle. Much more power behind it than a .223. I should have stated that in my OP. No photos, he was using a spotting scope to confirm shots.

No it was not call of duty either. Shot 5 rounds, two where high to the left, other three were center of target.

I am not looking to shoot 950 with an AR. I am though interested in seeing what I can do with it though. If I am going to spend some money on getting a scope, I want to know what I should be looking for. Thank you for those who provided useful information.

Re: New guy with a question

So it was the .50 you got the 3" @ 950 with?

That is much more believable & you had a good first experience with a .50.

For your Colt this is my first thought... It's still a little more money than what you're thinking but if you put the Vortex name on it or the Night Force name on it, and change nothing else, people would still pay 1600+ for it. I bet they would!!

Re: New guy with a question

It sounds like you're new to shooting. That's awesome, congratulations and welcome to this site.

Keep in mind that there are a few folks sharing knowledge on this site that are world class shooters, and even more folks that do this for a living (I'm a long long way off from either of those categories). Point being, that advice here often takes the form of tough love but is always honest and on point.

Tell us more about your AR. Flat top upper? If not, I'd say learn how to shoot your AR with iron sites. Mounting a scope on a carrying handle is awkward at best.

Personally, I'd recommend finding a shooting club for service rifle competition, join up and start getting some coaching. I wouldn't expect the same level of accuracy as a bolt action in .308, but you'll find that you can consistently hit a target at 500 to 600 yds once you know what you're doing.

Those shooting fundamentals will translate if/when you get a rifle more appropriate to mount a scope on top of.

Easier to learn to shoot irons, then move to a scope than vice versa IMO.
