Hello I'm new to Snipers hide forums and I have some basic shooting skills and I'm looking to expand upon that. I was wondering I've always been told to never let anything touch the barrel of my rifle as It effects the harmonics of the barrel.but some snipers will wrap their rifles barrels with burlap and add foliage. Is this posibility of effecting harmonics just something you accept in exchange for camo or am I missing something?

Re: new guy with a question

it actually a good question, an will probably lead to an interesting conversation

most of the precision rifles used for the task ar heavy barreled which helps a bit with controlling harmonics / barrel whip as compared to a sporter or "regular" barrel, and possibly on some very super slight level, anything like wrapping on a barrel would affect something.

but unless wrapping the barrel like a cast on a broken leg, the usual wrappings are so lightweight it shouldn't really be a major concern.

Re: new guy with a question

in my experience any zero shift, which was very very negligable, didnt bring the group size out of a kill shot at 800, "max effective" for the M-24, mind you we are talkin a human torso so the effects werent enough to not be able to kill bad guys out to the weapons "max effective" range.

I second VAJJ's comments.

Keep in mind that every rifle will be different depending on bedding, barrel contour, weight of material and how it's held on, etc., so testing your specific setup will be necessary.

Most of the time the shift is little to none with a well set up rifle and a couple pieces of lightweight burlap held on by rubber bands. Just remember the point of ghillie is to break up the outline, not completely hide it, so it only takes a little. The Krylon and your position does the rest.

A full veil will definitely have an effect on the POI.

interesting but in my substantially extensive field trials zero shift was very significant and exponentially increased group sizes out of kill shot at 500 , "max effective" for the hk-91 clone, mind you it is a deadly precise platform but i believe the layer of burlap dramatically hampered its ability to execute snipery perfection despite the bsa wonder optic and seasoned rifleman that expertly steered it.

I see your point, I must have forgetten to mention that though burlap didnt shift zero all that much, a flea once landed on the barrel of my FAL as I was about to rip a round into a "high value target" and the weight of the flea threw off harmonics making the round hit the dirt 6 feet in front of me, needless to say I was a little emberassed being that I was laying on top of my spotter at the time

Physics would dictate that any alteration will result in a change; but the magnitude of this kind of change would likely be pretty insignificant.

Re: new guy with a question

FWIW:

I have noticed a POI with a lot of tension on a barrel -- like resting it on a tree branch in a goofed up field position.

I have not noticed a POI shift with small amounts of pressure -- like a shirt draped over the barrel to keep snow off (muzzle was clear).
