Hey I just got a few hundred rounds of lapua brass (yay me.) but some of the necks are dented in. Anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks for you input!

Re: New lapua brass dented...

Yes. Get a round metal rod or something large and strong enough to get into the neck of the case. Then force the bent part of the brass back out. Once you open it up to about the normal shape, you can get it in the sizing die, and size it back to spec. I see this a lot with Win brass, or brass that's packaged in a bag. But Lapua comes in a box, so ???

Thanks for the info, sounds good. The lapua comes in a box yes, and this box was pretty crushed on one side. Had a few cases like that. I figure it's not a huge deal, just wanted to see what you hide guys do to get it back in the fight.

Thanks again.

Re: New lapua brass dented...

Sizing die.

You must be mistaken - Lapua brass ALWAYS comes ready to load and perfect right out the box.

My last 250 I loaded I had to re-size 40% the necks to round them out to my satisfaction. Only one was as bad as yours, and I ended up damaging the case trying to straighten it. Good luck with that one.

For the money I paid for these, it should've come individually wrapped in gucci bags.

Yeah seriously, For the price of 100 pieces you would think that they could include a container that might be used to hold loaded ammo afterwards, probably protect the brass better that way too.

Re: New lapua brass dented...

Sometimes if you try to size it with it dented this bad, the expander ball will crush the case. If you have a Redding FL sizing die, you may need to open it up more, since their expander ball is not tapered at the bottom. I like the Hornady expander in their sizing die. It is shaped down to a point, and can take dented cases and open them up fairly well.

Re: New lapua brass dented...

I guess I was lucky then to get 200 pcs that were not dented at all. But with being said, the brass is tighter than it really has to be it the neck area. I tried loading one round and found it very hard to seat the bul. I then pulled the bul. to check it out only to find it was really scratched up. I ordered a expanding die with mandrel to run through all the cases before trying to load any more up. I see on the 6BR sight that they suggest doing this also because the necks on Lapua brass are so tight.

Re: New lapua brass dented...

Get A LEE COLLET DIE.............and your problems are easy to correct, and history.
Besides, IMHO, ALL new brass necks need to be put thru one prior to Inside Neck Reaming, for concentricity.

Re: New lapua brass dented...

I always resize new Lapua brass and use an expander ball. The factory necks are too small, so I expand them with the ball and resize them with a neck die. Hasn't anyone noticed the high tension when seating bullets in new Lapua brass? This also takes care of the occasional neck ding.
