hi, I got a m&p22 for christmas to go along with my m&p9. I was thinking it would be a great trainer especially in times like these when all ammo is scarce and inflated.

Well after about 500 rounds of a few different brands of ammo I am experiencing reliability problems. Failures to feed, failures to extract, failure to lock open. Mostly failures to eject and failures to lock open. Seems like the gun is short stroking.

I have tried cci standard velocity, federal bulk, winchester bulk. All have problems extracting cases and locking open. Sometimes the cases dont get out of the chamber, sometimes they barely make it out and get locked up in the action. Failure rate is about 1 in 10, so every magazine.

I really dont want to have to buy something high velocity like mini mags. Having to feed a trainer handgun 10cent a round ammo defeats the purpose of a trainer, I load 9mm cheaper than that.

Re: new m&p22 problems

Have you tried cleaning the pistol? .22 ammunition is notoriously dirty. If the chamber is getting good and filthy, it may be restricting the case during extraction. That would cause the "short-stroke" condition you mentioned.

Re: new m&p22 problems

That's very odd that you're having so many different distinct failure modes simultaneously.

I've run thousands through my M&P22, mostly Federal AE and Winchester Xpert, and haven't had any of that.

My bet is that your grip is brushing the slide lock. It only takes the fainest pressure to prevent it from rising, which would explain your failures to feed and lock open. To test this, shoot the gun 1-handed with your thumb resting low on the magazine release.

As for the failures to extract, check for a tight/burred chamber first. On my M&P22, I can take a new round and drop it into the barrel and it drops in easily, with only 1/16th of an inch exposed. The tiniest bit of a tap from my fingertip seats the round fully in the chamber, needing no force at all. And this gun has NEVER been cleaned.

If your rounds will drop into the chamber as easily, then check the extractor to make sure it isn't chipped or clogged with gunpowder.

Re: new m&p22 problems

Have one that had/has similar problems. Cleaning made no difference. Because I read on some other forums that folks were running CCI Mini-mags with no problem I ran one box through and had no malfunctions. After that the gun feeds Federal bulk copper plated with no issues. The gun will not feed Winchester bulk lead with any reliability at all.

Re: new m&p22 problems

Ive fed everything through mine with no problems and usually only a quick wipe down when I get home. I don't think mine has had. Good cleaning in well over 1000 rds. I shoot mostly bulk ammo, Remington, Winchester, CCI Blazer. I'd try a good cleaning to get all the factory oil off. If it continues contact S&W they'll take care of it.
Good luck

Re: new m&p22 problems

I have a couple of them. Must be a lucky guy because neither has jammed on any 22LR ammo. I even shoot CCI and Wolfe standard velocity stuff with my can on.
One was used as a side match pistol at a shoot in Louisville, KY a couple of months ago. It digested over 500 rounds of CCI Blazer with no malfunctions of any kind.
My guess is as stated already, you may be bumping the slide stop inadvertently.

Re: new m&p22 problems

I clean it every few hundred rounds. I dont think i am riding the slide with my hand. My buddy bought one when I did and we shoot them side by side and experience many of the same issues. It almost seems like if the recoil spring were a few lbs lighter it would function really well. Hopefully it will break itself in soon.
