I just bought a new muzzle brake for my Remington 700 AAC-SD 308. As you can see from the pic it's not seating all the way. I have a crush washer but if I use it, it looks like there is a gap inside the brake between the crown and the mating surface of the brake. What should I do? I don't want to take it to a machine shop if I can do it myself. Thought? Btw I'm new to the forum and new to bolt actions.

Where did you get the brake? Brakes for the AAC need to have a relief cut to seat to the shoulder. You can have the brake cut by a smith, or use your washer. Does your brake time correctly with the washer (ports at 90 degrees)?

No it's about a qtr turn off hand tightened, should I sand the washer down a bit more? The brake I got off amazon for $35image.jpg

well I ground down the crush washer problem is, now its on there for good unless I take it to a smith. The only option I have to to grind down the brake so that it will be at 90 degree angle up and down. Good thing is the brake was $35 so im not too worried about messing it up.

I would not mess with the brake. If you purchased it direct from amazon, they will take it back. Contact Ross Schuler and have him make you a brake [email protected], do some google'n and you will see his work. His brakes have the three ports on top to help prevent barrel hop. Just tell him its for the AAC and he will cut the relief threads for you.

You can then take it to a smith, or look for a shim kit, or maybe a peel washer, to seat that thing against the shoulder of the barrel and indexed correctly.

There have been a few guys here that have them on their aac's here is a thread.

+1 on the Ross Schuler break. I have one on my AAC-SD. That said, you can use a dremel and grind out the inside to make space for the relief cut. Take your time. It wont be beautiful but no one will ever see it. Once you have it so it will thread on all the way you have to time it. Put a piece of sand paper down on a hard, flat surface and slowly sand away the face of the break where it meets the barrel. Do this till it is in the right position.

Got it indexed correct however; there is still a gap between the end of the barrel and the flat mating surface of the brake. It's hard to explain, basically if you look in the brake you can see the end of the barrel the the inside treads of the muzzle brake for about 1/16 to an 1/8 inch. Is this goin to be a problem?

I wish I would have just went this route and ordered a brake from Ross instead of ordering a PRC from PWS 2 months ago that hasn't shipped yet.
