Rifle Scopes New Schmidt & Bender PM2 6-36x56

My big gripe with this scope is why they didn’t do a 56mm objective.
Because they made the scope too short with the 8x erector, when dealing with short focal lengths trying to correct for halation (flare), distortion, image quality all get compounded when using larger diameter objectives. You don't see any ultra short designs with 8x erectors using 56mm objectives, the Hensoldt 3.5-25x56 is probably the closest to this but look at the price and the weight, this is what they did for the best optical performance they could get. Schmidt 3-27x56 and 5-45x56 are other examples of high erector ratio with 56mm objectives but both these scopes are "long" scopes. The new Steiner T6Xi 3-18x56 is the newest scope that is on the shorter side but with a 56mm objective; however, Steiner kept this to a 6x erector which allowed them to find a good compromise that didn't affect IQ enough to make it a deal breaker.

Look at this new Schmidt 6-36x56 design, yes it is shorter than the 5-25 but 6x is the new 5x with regard to where technology has taken us within the optics world, and while they made the scope "shorter" they didn't make it too short.

I believe Leica lost in England, but won in the EU. In practice, I’m not sure what that means from a retail selling standpoint.

Directly from the link above:
The Board of Appeal of the European Patent Office (EPO) in Munich has granted the requests submitted by Leica Camera AG and another well-known riflescope manufacturer and has revoked the European Patent 1 746 451 held by Swarovski Optik KG as, in the opinion of the Board of Appeal, it does not have any inventive step. The revocation of the patent has immediate effect. The decision applies to all EU member states.
Curious who this other "well-known mfr" was???
Leica Camera AG has thus achieved an important legal victory in the 3.5-year dispute with Swarovski Optik KG regarding the European riflescope patent. Following the specialist trade fair, IWA OutdoorClassics, in March 2011, there had been an accusation that Leica Camera AG would infringe the disputed Swarovski patent with its Magnus riflescope. Conversely, Leica Camera AG always maintained that the relevant patent was not legally valid. This legal opinion has now been confirmed by the decision of the EPO Board of Appeal.
A 3.5 year dispute has got to be extremely costly - no wonder why Leica didn't pursue in the USA and likely why no one else wants to especially now, as by the time the legal proceedings were over the patent itself will likely be over.
Stephan Albrecht, head of the sport optics division at Leica Camera AG, comments: ‘Patents are for protecting innovations and developments but should not prevent free and fair competition. Standing shoulder to shoulder with other leading vendors, Leica Camera AG has continuously stressed that the patent held by Swarovski Optik KG does not protect any inventive step; instead it essentially describes the known state of the art. We are very pleased that the European Patent Office agrees with our opinion and that the sale of our products will no longer be impeded by this dispute.’
This is where some of the offense from the community comes from with respect to Swarovski as it would appear Swaro submitted for the patent simply because they could, not because they had invented any creative way to accomplish the feature (wide FOV eyepiece). Just like in EU, this patent would likely not hold up in court in the USA; however, battling the patent would be an extremely costly endeavor for any company.
In addition to their outstanding imaging performance, the relevant riflescopes from the Magnus product line are characterised by their exceptionally wide field of view, a greater than sixfold zoom range and, above all, by their mechanical robustness and durability.
And this explains why the Magnus line of scopes are still sold outside the USA and are no longer offered inside the USA. Earlier posts indicate the patent was submitted in 2007 and will expire in 20 years, so hopefully in 2027 we'll see a bunch of wide angle eyepiece options show up here in the states, but that is still a long time to wait especially for the Schmidt 6-36x56...

Yep, that’s what my math showed me. So that’s what I stuck with.
Scope turned up today. Stunning in all regards, keen to get range time asap.

Regarding FOVgate, when I have the Scope set to 36x, I have the 6mil windage marking in view i.e the Euro version has the same FOV at 36x as the US examples have at ~30x.

More like 6.2, but a significant difference all the same

Probably the right reticle if you want something simple. I will say I was surprised by how unobtrusive the GR2ID is in practice. Very well executed reticle.
I like my SKMR3 but think the Tremor reticles are way too busy. This will be on a .308 20” barreled Tikka in a KRG chassis. With a 20 MOA mount, it should suit my needs well. Why so much mag? My eyes suck plain and simple and I prefer Euro glass with an easy to adjust diopter.

It's completely epic in all ways. One of the few recent product experiences that just blew me away - I've been trying to get it to slip up, putting it in difficult lighting conditions and looking for edge to edge clarity issues - it's truly astonishing.

Honestly difficult to see how it could be improved upon - perhaps with a smaller illumination knob. That said I dig the smaller footprint compared to the 5-25. I can't comment on durability as it's a new scope for me, but glass, ergonomics, size/weight, and the quintessential german quality makes it hard to beat. One problem I have is that it's hard looking through my other scopes without thinking of upgrading. One kidney is enough, right?

No doubt it’s their best model in ten years. I can’t see a reason to go with the venerable 5-25x anymore; the 6-36x just beats it in every way. The same could arguably be said for the 3-27x and 5-45x. At this point I’d be fine if the PM II line consisted of the 6-36x and the two Ultra Shorts.

I really wish the tumor was left alone sigh... That new illuminated knob looks so contrived... But your right they still own that ultra short nobody comes close

It's shocking how much $$$ they 327 and 545 are and are so inferior to the 636. I seriously don't understand their price model.

thanks for the replies. I think the P5 reticle will be fine for me now because the longest range I have access too is < 200-300 yards. Hopefully some day I will have a reason to buy a 6.5 Creedmoor rifle and learn how to shoot beyond 600 yards.

I really love my short dot dual. Hence, the reason I want another Schmidt

Just don't use those mtii turrets in the mud or rain..... They can lock up and fail... Only Schmidt I have ever seen this happen too... Haven't had that issue with the dtii+ but that was SB answer just remove the pins and shoot during the day lol

Does it have MTC?
You gonna get a leupold now? :ROFLMAO:

It didn't have anything at the time of that pic the turret had seized completely, you could move the lever but that turret wasn't moving 😂.... I would just use iron sights before I would be caught dead with a Leupold....

No just sticking with the dtt+ versions from now on but was a little upset with SB over it although they did repair it and swap the turret.

I had something similar with my 5-45 it failed at the NF match in 2022, it was actually the design of the mechanism inside, nothing to do with mud or rain. They have since reconfigured the parts or fixed it, was something like a metal part wasn't heat treated right. Part of the fix was removing the indicator pins.

Wow... That's where mine failed... I was told it's due to fine dirt and debris getting into the pins and then it locks up and it's widespread so their solution was to just get rid of the pins...

What did SB do for your 545?

They repaired it by replacing the internals on it, with the updated version. Seemed like it was more of a widespread mechanical issue of when, not if it would fail. I actually like my 5-45 a lot more than my 3-27. Though i did have the 3-27 reticle swapped to lrr-mil to match.

How often are y’all doing night shooting at ranges that require more than one turn!?!?

I dunno, 12 MRAD gets my long range guns to 1500 yards.

You guys are shooting 1500 yards in the dark and then dialing down to like 300 yards?

Can’t you just dial back to zero stop and start over?

Seriously I don’t shoot at dark much and I’m trying to understand the need for a tactile indicator

I think there are other ways of keeping track of where you are above and below 12 MRAD or wherever the second turn starts

That mtt scope is .5 mil clicks.... I was in rev 2- 3 frequently... Heck I was in rev 2 just to get to like 700 depending on caliber.

Depending on conditions.... Yea 1500 happens often especially if using an illuminator.

Sure you can dial back... That's what we did in the early 00s lol.

You ever find your way south of the north bombing range and you hear the sweet sound of a bullet cracking the sound barrier in the quiet of midnight with hardly any report because it was suppressed... Listen for that gong to ring 2 seconds later... Unofficial team ai Utah is prolly out there making music

Why not the DT35 MTC?

Probably because 35 mil in 2 revolutions is like:

Can't imagine the graduations on the DT35 turrets are any finer than the older standard DT turrets that allowed 26 mils in 2 turns, but some people do have a problem seeing the closely spaced together hash marks.

S&B actually has an entire page on their website about the different turret options...

DTII+ 27 vs 30.5:

DT MTC 27 vs 35:

A TTII+ (triple turn) turret with 13 mils per revolution would allow 37 mils of dialing (the entire erector travel) and probably have easy to read widely spaced graduations, and they could have a turn indicator pin that pops out higher for the the third revolution similar to how the razor G3 works (or even have a second pin pop up.) However, they may have to make the turret taller for the third row of numbers. Given that S&B seems to stick to single turn, double turn, and multi turn, I doubt we'll ever see a triple turn TTII+ turret.
