New to PRS ...need advice

Hi, I am a brand new, first time poster.

I recently had a custom 6.5 Grendel made for me. I just wanted something other than .223 to punch paper on a Sunday afternoon. Since then I have become very interested in PRS. I know that the rifle I have is not the correct caliber or equipment for this sport but there is a club within driving distance of my home that has a 600 yard max range and they host occasional PRS matches.....and I thought I might try this and just shoot what I have instead of just watching.

Totally ignorant, up to now just a deer hunter, pheasant hunter, reloader and enjoy shooting just about anything.

I emailed the club for advice on an optic and bought a Viper Vortex PST Gen 2 5-25x50 FFP scope.

I am overwhelmed by what rings to buy. There is a 24” 1 inch bull barrel on my rifle. I am going to try and enclose a photo. Can you give me any advice?

This newbie would really appreciate your thoughts.

Aadland is a great mount for a heavy gas gun. Then get that barrel threaded and go tear up a match. You won't be giving up a whole lot inside 600 with a 6.5G, at least not enough to matter during the steep learning curve of your first season.

Thanks Tony! I looked at their website and their stuff looks awesome and would like to go in that direction.

While playing around with the rifle and scope I figured the optic would mount with low rings but I would not be able to get low enough on the rifle to get a good sight picture at higher magnification without a struggle. (I hope that makes sense)

If I can impose on you for some more advice...... (I hope that makes sense). When I have set up deer rifles in the past I always tried to use the lowest rings I could get away with and the drop in the stock seemed to allow me to do this. This is the first time I have mounted a long range optic on an AR pattern rifle and it looks like I won’t have the luxury of lower rings?

With that said I am attracted to the one piece base and rings setup that Aadland offers thinking I could avoid some of the alignment issues with separate rings?

They have a one piece 20 MOA 30 mm mount that raises the axis of the scope 1.45 inches above the bore. I am thinking that might give me a better sight picture? (Since I am using a 6.5 G maybe the 20 MOA might be useful too?)

Very interested in your thoughts. When it comes down to it I am a total rookie at anything related to PSR and would appreciate you saving me from myself if I am about to make a dumb mistake here!

With an ar you will want something 1.4-1.5" for the reason you said, the buffer tube keeps your head up relatively high so get rings to match that.

With good rings you wont have alignment issues but a one peice mount is generally preferred for an ar so that you can extend the scope more forward if need be with a cantilever and so you can get some cant built into it.

Get the 20 moa model, it wont hurt anything.

You are correct, the lack of comb drop with AR's pretty much rules out low rings.
1.4-1.6" is standard for an AR scope mount. Every now and then you'll see guys with low mounted scopes but they're the exception and must have concave cheekbones or something.

The 20 MOA slope isn't needed for your intended ranges but it doesn't hurt anything to have it, especially if you decide to really stretch the rifles legs someday.

The one piece mount will keep alignment problems at bay but more importantly it will keep the mount on the receiver rather than having a ring out on the handguard which can cause all kinds of problems.

Besides the mount, if at all possible try and shoot every 50 yard increment form 100 to 600 yards, and write all your DOPE down. I've seen a lot of people show up at their first match and they spent a lot of time trying to get the right gear, and never bothered getting dope for their rifles. It's no fun trying to guess your dope all day.

Other than that, my biggest piece of advice is get out and shoot. Too many people get caught up in trying to 'prepare' for a match and never actually go shoot. Rather then getting stuck in a perpetual state of preparation, just get out and have fun. People will lend you any gear you want to try, help with corrections, etc. when they learn you're a new shooter.

If you're looking for a mount, geissele has good mounts but I would wait until they have their holiday sales. If it is in the budges spuhr makes outstanding mounts. Badger is also worth looking at. Like Ozzy said above get out there shoot and have fun.

The DOPE/ballistics aspect of this sport is one of the things that really grabs me about PRS. The thinking and data development that goes into this seems so cool. I am a hand loader for years but this sport looks like it can take it to a new level - which to me is a huge part of the fun.

My objective is to compete against myself, ( no delusions about winning anything) understand and learn as much as I can and get better at it. I know I’m going to love this!

The DOPE/ballistics aspect of this sport is one of the things that really grabs me about PRS. The thinking and data development that goes into this seems so cool. I am a hand loader for years but this sport looks like it can take it to a new level - which to me is a huge part of the fun.

My objective is to compete against myself, ( no delusions about winning anything) understand and learn as much as I can and get better at it. I know I’m going to love this!

Quick FYI, there are several posts on the PX area where guys are selling several Spuhr mounts at great prices (just a little over 300 bucks), and they look great!!!
