I recently purchased a Savage 110 (long action) in .270 win that came w/ a low end Simmons scope 3-9X32. I am a college student so I don't have the funds to get top notch equipment, but I am just wanting to see what you all think would be the best first options to make my rifle more useful for long distance shooting. I am fairly new to rifle shooting. Last time on the range, with my current setup, I hit about a 3" spread at 200 yards. Im not sure if that is okay for a noob.

The stock is wood and I believe it is a heavy barrel. After doing research, I haven't been able to find many different stocks.

Help a n00b out! Thanks.

Re: New to the Hide, Looking for opinions.

I've been looking at that for the moment, but can't decide. I'm between the Millet TRS-1, the Bushnell Elite 3200 Tact, or the Nikon Buckmaster 6-18X40

After that I was hoping to find a new stock. McMillan look sweet, just a little pricy for me.

Re: New to the Hide, Looking for opinions.

Try some diff ammo types, I had a Browning A bolt in 270 years ago and it only liked one loading.

Once you find what it likes it will do better for you.

Re: New to the Hide, Looking for opinions.

Bed the action so that it won't move in the stock.
Free float the barrel.
Get solid mounts.
Make sure your scope achieves a zero and holds a zero.
Go from there.

I understand how to zero the scope, but I'm not familiar with how to accomplish the first 3. I guess I'm more of a noob than I thought.

Re: New to the Hide, Looking for opinions.

You could start out on the right foot by signing up for the Sniper'sHide online training. I will post some teasers of the videos for you. I think its $125 but the information could be priceless. Teaches breathing and when to shoot, how to build your grip around your trigger finger for a straight back trigger pull, how to get behind the rifle, how to load the bipod or shoot from the bench etc etc etc. You can learn a lot of what is in there by staying on this site and studying for about three years or do what I should have done from day one and joined.

Re: New to the Hide, Looking for opinions.

I say really learn to shoot your rifle to it's/your full potential. Once you get better through proper techniques then you will be able to go from there.

There are so many ways you could go but it would be nice to have an idea of what your gun might need. Not all guns come out of the box equal, some shoot lights out and some don't. You can get a new trigger, better scope, float the barrel, get the action bedded, get the action trued, get the barrel re crowned etc etc.

I'd say its better to hone your skills, if the gun is a shooter then you can do upgrades like aftermarket trigger or stock. If its not then look at rebarrel and action truing or new gun altogether.

Learn to really shoot first, it could save money in the long run. You can try dot drills where you have multiple quarter sized targets at 100 yards and try to put one bullet in the center of each one. These drills will tell you a lot about what you can do or need to work on. Let an experienced shooter try your gun for a five shot group or a dot drill, that could tell you a lot about your gun.

Here you go. This should help some but I highly recommend the Sniper'sHide online training membership. It will be a huge help, their teaching is straight forward, easy to understand and makes perfect sense when you watch it. They are also not out to sell anything but proven knowledge.

Another thought: Focus on the 90° angle in your first finger joint, addressing the trigger 1/2 way between tip and second joint, and pressing that trigger straight through the buttstock into your shoulder! </div></div>

Re: New to the Hide, Looking for opinions.

@ carter, I was in your place 10 years ago, I too started when I was a student. Its tough at first to get past the itch of wanting to improve hardware, lets face it the funds are not there and if they are you need it for life expenses(car, school, food).
bedding that barrel is the first thing you should do in terms of an equipment improvement. After that you should do what you can to improve your knowledge(wikipedia 270 winchester and know your cartridge) and use the snipershide the best you can for more info. then just work on your trigger pull and your breathing. You said you have 3"groups at 200 yards thats a benchmark. start at that and try and improve from there, once you top out and cant seem to get any tighter than that, then look for more hardware upgrades. any questions pm me

Re: New to the Hide, Looking for opinions.

I appreciate it Nicky, I'll do that. I have been doing insane amounts of research on this site and many others, learning everything I can about shooting and my particular rifle.

The one equipment upgrade I think is a necessity is an upgraded optic. Out of the three in my initial post, which one would you prefer? or any other in that price range?

Re: New to the Hide, Looking for opinions.

Before you continue on any upgrades sit down at the range and really note whats happening with your shooting on paper to confirm your original 3" at 200. Then do exactly what graham said. after those items go back to the range and observe your shot patterns. After all that then you should consider upgrading your scope.
