Gunsmithing Newbie Encore Question

The rundown:
Match Grade Machine .308 barrel SS and fluted w/ break
SS receiver
unfinished stock, laminated wood....

Now that i have all the parts and am about to undertake my first build....does anyone have any suggestions that would help with the assembly and maxamize accuracy??
Is there any need to attempt to bed the receiver in the stock?

Keep in touch with the boys at Matchgrade you'll get the "best" info there..I have a .325WSM built by them and it's a tack driver.There are alot of options,some are hype..Try the barrel and see what you got..Good luck you'll love that rifle and barrel..

Do the Bellm trigger job and get one of his springs, they are capable of excellent pulls.

There's no way to isolate/float the foreend from the barrel. The "hanger bar" was quite common several years ago. Bedding is not likely to affect accuracy.

I've used Birchwood Casey Tru-oil on a couple unfinished foreends - takes 2-3 weeks, doing another coat every night. Don't rush it....

You'll like it.

Thanks for the tips...
About the bedding...wouldnt bedding the stock to the receiver make the receiver less likely to shift in any way therefore changeing the point of impact.. I agree the forearm is really a lost cause

bedding the frame to the butt stock is the lost cause , bedding the forarm is not. if you do not bed the forend you will se diferances in the goups if the forend is not located exactly the same place on the bags each time , basicaly the same situation as a barrel tuner , your chancing the pressure points which in turn changes the barrel harmonics.
The hanger bar does work , but simply bedding the forend between the screws works just as well.
The trigger is a good place to gain alot of accuracy , get a couple springs from Mike Bellem and follow his instructions , you can get a very respectible trigger our of the Encore and do so safely.
Also look into his over sized hinge pin , check your factory pin and see how much play their in in the barrel lug then check for play in the frame holes , do this with them appart , if they are not to sloppy a 1x pin will likley fit your needs , if their is enough for the pin to fall right out then a 2x may be needed , I have seem factory rifles need to have the pin driven out due to the frame or the lug being tight yet it was sloppy loose in the other , the action should open smoth and slowly like bank vault

i was going to bed the forearm anyway...glad to see it wouldnt be a waste after all the reason for me building this gun is for the practice and learning experience gained for future work

Custom barrels aren't as finicky as a factory barrels to get a good load.
The Bellm springs are an easy way to get the trigger weight down.

is the pin tight in the barrel lug by itself and the frame by itself?

if you hold the gun out strait and pull the barrel release does it fall open quickly?

yeah....its a quick fall..the pin has probably significantly less than .001" slop in one side of the receiver and probably .001 on the other side. The pin fits as if is slightly thinner in the center than either end. It fits relatively well to the barrel. I will probably get the 1X pin to try.

looks good , how much clearance did you give around the barrel??

Did you work the trigger and hunge pin yet??

havent worked the pin or the trigger assembly yet...i hope that the parts will be here by the weekend...
i didnt think about measuring the clearance when sanding...i just measured and couldn't get 20 thou feeler gauge under the barrel without it getting tight...its probably close to 12 thou maybe 15 tops....whatever 7 layers of masking tape is.
The rear pillar didnt protrude up as mich as i had hoped, but i cant figure why??
The largest interferance i had to deal with was where the barrel enters the receiver sides....the receiver was squeezing the barrel..so i used a fine file and some 320 grit to relieve it and polish the finish
