I've just recently decided to get into long range shooting. I bought a nice used Remington 700 sps police in 300 win and it has a leupold vx1 already on it. I'm wanting better optics and can't figure out what to buy. I'm on a budget (sorta) so looking to spend less than $1000. I'm leaning towardsa millett lrs1 because the reviews on it look great. Any input or suggestions from you guys will be greatly appreciated.

That VX1 might not be fancy, but you can get some good trigger time with it. IMO going Millett would be moving backwards, your gonna swap a $250 American optic for a $350 Chinese optic that has a few more features.
I will prob get flamed for my comments because Millett has a cult following, but its only my opinion.
Save that $1k and with $500 more you can get into a nice used Nightforce, Steiner, Leupold MK4 or other.

Is the rifle a sps or a 700p (police) two different ends of the spectrum.
Anyway for the price range you stated look at the Vortex Viper PST series. The first focal plane runs just under 1k before tax. Just my 0.02. Much better glass than millet.

I like the vortex viper hs 6-24x50. Don't like illuminated do no need for the pst. Any thoughts on the hs? It's on sale for $589 right now

Spongebob, a Police 300WM is a great gun, I've owned a few and have been pleasantly surprised by their accuracy for the money spent. My recommendation would be to leave the scope as is (and thatfrom a Leupold non-fan) and instead pay for professional instruction. A good class will do far more for improving your capabilities than no instruction and a new scope.
Love the HS! Awesome scope for the price. Best feature is the target elevation turret. I have one on one of my 308s right now actually.
My shooting is great. I was in the marine corps for 6 years and maintained an expert qual everytime i went to the range. I am an avid shooter out to 500yds. I've just decided i want to go farther
Be aware that Marine Corpse qual and long range are very different things (I too am a Marine.) The same principles and skills are needed, but you need new skills too, and those the Corpse didn't teach you.
Being an expert qual is a good thing, you have a good foundation, but you need new skills, and professional instruction can save you lots of frustration.

I am confused, I did not recommend a Millett, I stated in my post that a Millett is moving backward. The VX1 may not be a NF but it will hold its own until he get some other glass. I dont waste my time nor money on Chinese crap(well at least glass)
If you are referring to the Cult following, yes. Anytime someone asks about a Millett there is a barrage of folks talking about how they can shoot the eye out of a deer at 1000Y or some crazy horse shit like the glass is as good as their 15 S&B's that they sold only to keep the Millett (slight exaggeration, but you get my point). I am sure some will pop up here.

I really like the vortex viper hs long range 4-16x50. I would really like more power...maybe 6-20, any other vortex scopes i haven't checked?
Are you looking at the 4-14 or 6.5-20 mark 4? I think if I were choosing, and jumping up to the mark4's $1300 price range, I'd go with the SIII 6-24 or the Swfa SS 5-20 over the mark 4's or the PST if squeezing out the most optical quality for the price.. If you don't care about the pst's cool ebr-1 illum reticle. If you want FFP, then the SS is the scope to beat for its price, with the PST and Bushnell right behind it, IMO. All that being said, the PST and Mark 4's are excellent scopes, and both have about the best customer support in the industry.
