Newbie question - (.308) POF vs. REPR vs. LMRT

Hello everyone, I am new to this board. I have been reading a lot, but this is my first post. I am new to rifles, and have wanted a long range rifle for quite some time. I have been shooting pistols for many years, but this is my first venture into rifles. I am looking into target shooting out to 500-800 yards (if I get good).

Having said that, I am looking for a reliable, accurate, medium/long range rifle that I can grow with. I have access to a 1,000 yard range not to far from my house. I have chosen the .308 cartridge after looking at multiple cartridges. I have also narrowed the rifles down to the following: POF .308 20 inch, the REPR .308 20 inch, and the LMRT (my friend recommended the LMRT - he shoots rifles quite a bit). I am looking to spend about $2,500-3,500 on the rifle alone. After I put a few hundred rounds through it, I will be buying some optics, but first I would like to "get to know" my rifle.

I spoke with a dealer and they said that they have not had any problems with current generation POF rifles, and for an extra $1k, the REPR costs about a third more, with little extra benefit. I have read many posts on this site from mid/late last year (2009) about reliability issues with the POF - ie. extraction, feeding from certain magazines, etc. It seems that these issues have been resolved in recent posts. Recent posts seem to show that people who own this rifle have had very good results with it, have had excellent accuracy, and that the newer rifles have not had the previous mentioned issues. Also, customer service seems excellent.

I would appreciate any input on these rifles, both positive and negative, as well as any problems that POF was plagued with last year, and if they have been resolved. Any input from Scott (the customer service rep from POF) as to the problems that this rifle platform was having last year and how they have been handled/resolved, would also be greatly appreciated. I am leaning towards the POF, but am open on hearing about other rifles if there are other recommendations as well.

Thank you.

I am very pleased with my 20" pof, however it is only a few months old so i cant speak to earlier generation guns that might have had issues. If i were buying today i would still go with the POF ,but i would most likely go with the 6.5 Creedmoore in the group buy.

Try running a search of the forums using the SH Google Search engine. There have been numerous reviews and comparisons of various semi-auto 308s, including all those you mentioned.

Here you go:

Additionally...I'm not sure what specific "problems" you are referring to, but I have been running my POF since before then and it has over 2k rounds down the pipe without a hiccup. With quality factory ammo it is sub-MOA all day long and my reloads are getting into the 1/2MOA range. I exclusively run the Magpul LR-20 PMAGs now and I have not had a single failure of any sort since switching over (I can't say the same for C-Products and DPMS factory mags). Whatever "problems" you have heard about with POF are in the extreme minority, so don't let them sway you from that as a possible choice. There are also several folks here affiliated with POF who do their best to respond to questions, concerns and any issues that may arrise. POF is a top-notch outfit and I recommend them without hesitation.

Re: Newbie question - (.308) POF vs. REPR vs. LMRT

my "opinion"

POF: Great rifles with great CS... There's a few dealers/reps on this forum that are always here with firsthand knowledge. Many speak of the rifles accuracy (sub moa).

LWRC: I own the 20" model. It had the magazine mod done to it and has ran flawless since. Has many unique features such as the side charging handle and slim rail design (best on the market).Runs clean with the piston set up. Solid MOA rifle. Shoots best with 175 gr pills (best I've shot is a .83 @ 100m)

LMT MRP: Heard a lot of good things about this rifle. Great company and great products (plus you know they'll be around for awhile due to the contract with the British)

Overall: Hard to beat any of the 3....

Re: Newbie question - (.308) POF vs. REPR vs. LMRT

I have an Armalite AR-10 20" and its wonderful. The only problem I have had is with 25rd mags not catching the bolt, or if it does, not holding it very well. As in, I can physically lock the bolt back, and barely shake the rifle and the bolt will slam forward. I am told not ALL 25d GenII mags do this, but of the 3 I have shot with, they do. But the bolt locking back is not a big deal to me. As for accuracy and reliability, I have shot 500rds no problems, and I shot 5" plates at 500yds with iron sights. Im sure this gun is capable of consecutive hits on those plates, but Im not. SigSauer is coming out with a piston version of the Armalite some time soon. Just my opinion.

Re: Newbie question - (.308) POF vs. REPR vs. LMRT

If you're going to spend that kind of money on an AR specifically for target shooting get a GAP rifle.

I don't think you would be "going wrong" with any of the ones you listed (POF or LMT would be my picks) but the GAP AR-10's I have seen were all incredible shooters AND you can get it built the way you want it.

These things are just made of sex if you ask me.

Re: Newbie question - (.308) POF vs. REPR vs. LMRT

Ill have to with BCP. GA Precision makes the best 308 Semi Auto yet. But you do pay for it. Get it any way you want, Armalite mags or DPMS mags, either one will get you accuracy to 1000yds or more under the right conditions. The REPR is over priced in my opinions. Also, if you dont mind waiting, FD Defense is currently making their piston AR, you should check them out.

Dtarget,

US OPTICS:
1.8-10x37
Black finish
ERGO
EREK Mil elev, M40 Mil windage
Red illumation, JNG mil reticle

GG&G:
Accucam Quick Detach Base with integral 30mm Rings
for bolt guns (works great with a 37 mm bell). The integral rings on the Accucam QD Integral Ring are spaced at 4.400 inches center to center. The height from the top of the dovetail to the centerline of the ring is 1.060 inches.

Do you have any trouble getting a proper cheek weld when the scope when mounted that low? Lower was definitely better when it came to bolt guns, but I have found you need a HELLUVA lot more height with the AR.
