Hey all, I'm new to the hide, and I have a question for everybody. I have a savage 10fp in 308 that I purchased a few years ago. I am looking into a new stock for it and I want to know (A) what stocks seem to improve the accuracy on this rifle the best and (B) what kind of accuracy gains did you see? I can currently shoot sub moa with factory federalpowershok (the cheap stuff) if I settle down but I'd like to hit sub 1/2 moa. Any suggestions or reccomendations?

Re: Newbie question

I've had good success with a B&C Medalist Sporter for one of my hunting rifles, a Rem 700. I just ordered a B&C Medalist A5 for my Rem SPS-Varmint as a result.

My hunting rifle was a sub-MOA rifle (.308 Win)...it now delivers 1/2" or smaller 100-yard groups with Fed GMM and my hand loads, 0.5"-0.75" groups with Barnes 168gr TSX and TTSX. I hope I get similar results with the SPS-V. It was producing 0.2"-0.35" groups with the factory stock so I'm not expecting dramatic improvement.

BTW, Stocky's Inc. has good prices on B&C stocks.

The only direct improvement that a stock has to the accuracy of the rifle itself is the bedding and free float. A bedded stock will improve the rifle and having a stock that doesn't contact the barrel forward of the recoil lug will help as well.

No 1 stock is going to magically improve the rifles accuracy for every shooter enough to be worth it. You need to find a stock that fits you to the rifle in order to make yourself and the rifle a better overall system.

Stocks like the McMillan A5 are popular because it fits most people very well. They are also set up to bed very well and really stiff so barrel contact doesn't happen.
