Just getting started, so far I have a Howa HCR and a Burris XTR II 5x25x50 34mm tube on the way, my question is what ring height should I go with. Howa comes with a EGW 20 moa rail. Not trying to break the bank do you have any good recommendations?

Not sure where you ordered your HCR from but mine came with no base nor rail. Just a lil FYI in case you have not received it and are expecting it to have a rail.

It is supposed to come with a EGW one piece 20 MOA base. [h=3]Product Details[/h]

34mm Low rings (.92-.94") should clear a 50mm objective scope easily. Even with a heavy contour barrel.

Here is a 50mm objective on a 20MOA base w. 34mm low (.92") Seekins rings over a Bartlein #3 contour

Here is a 56mm objective on a 20MOA base w. 34mm low rings over a Bartlein Remington Sendero contour.

Thanks for all the input I went with the burris xtr signature rings. Just waiting on the new scope to come in, they sent me one with the g2b reticle and I was looking for th scr reticle.

I bought the Burris XTR since my Seekins low rings didn't work well with my scope/chassis set up. They were too low. One caution for you is that I have read a bunch of reviews on the XTR that say even when using a torque wrench set at 60 inch, the screws stripped. The range Burris gives is 65-100 inch pounds. I did 50 and seemed fine.

A word to the wise, I bought a Burris xtr2 to go on a tikka tac a1. I also selected the Burris xtr signature rings because of reviews and the adjustable cant. I started with the medium 1”” rings and they are too low due to the full length pic rail. I swear I did the calculation but must have been looking at the ocular diameter or something. On a rifle without a full length rail I think it would be fine.

Xtr2 objective = 58mm
distance to clear full length rail = 28mm = 1.1””. Not counting cant which is a mm and change or flip up covers which is even more.

So I returned my 1” xtr signatures in exchange for the highs which provide 1.5” clearance. These will leave a little margin to avoid hand guard hitting the optic during recoil.

Hopefully no one is tightening the screws that hold the two halves of the rings together to anywhere near 50 in-lb. Those screws are Torx T-15s (IIRC) and should not be tightened more than 15 - 20 in-lb. The nut that clamps onto the rail should be 50 - 55 in-lb.

Sorry, I meant the clamp screw/bolt that holds the lower ring to the base.
