I have a Rem 700 SA and am thinking of changing to the NF Direct Mount. I haven't been able to find any user information on them, though.

For a basic rifle and a scope that will never leave it, they look to be a good idea. Less parts equals good

Any reasons not to run one of these on a bolt gun? Why are they not more popular?

Thanks for posting this...I was looking for something just like this to save weight and lower the site height on a hunting rifle vs pic rail and rings. Just wish they offered for 34 and 35 mm scope tubes.

Aussie- From the looks of it you could use some lower rings, haha. Is that scope high enough?

that pic doesnt do any favors for it does it lol..

That pic makes it look pretty bad but im not getting a bad neck etc.. but then again I'm not on the scope hours at a time..

Re: NF Direct Mount- Who is using them? Reviews?

I got one a month ago for my hunting trip. Main reasons were; weight, strength and one thing less to come loose.

I ordered the lowest mount which I believe is listed as 1" and mounted this to a Remington 700 with a m24/m40 contour barrel. Over all I am happy with it. It is secure, lite and well made.

I did notice the screws were a little tough to get on at first, the screws that attach to the rifle action. I had to force them through the base first then set it on the rifle and secured them. I am not sure if that was by design or if mine was just tighter than normal. It attached with no further hang-ups.

The only thing I don’t care for is the height. They need to make one a little shorter in my opinion. I am using a nxs 3.5-15x50 and the objective sits higher than I would like above the barrel. You could easily use a 56mm obj with this mount and still have clearance.

But it is a good mount and I would buy it again knowing the above. Pic to follow.

I was considering this mount for my Rem XCR 20" tactical + NF NXS 2.5-10x32 compact scope.

It's turned out that the Murphy Precision's titanium base + 0.825" titanium rings are

1. Lower
2. Lighter
3. Stronger

and still give the ability to remove the scope quickly.

Re: NF Direct Mount- Who is using them? Reviews?

Thanks Niles. It is nice to see one actually mounted. The scope does look high and I bet even more space will be wasted sitting on top of a Rem varmint contour. I'm waiting to hear back from NF on the weight differences. I don't expect that large a difference between two piece bases with ultralight rings and the direct mount. I think I would rather have the scope sitting lower than save that half ounce... decisions decisions ...

When light and low are desired Talleys (while not a one-piece base) are great on hunting/field rigs.
Only drawback is there's no mao sloped in, but if the application doesn't call for it I like them alot!!

I used them on my silhouette rigs, but here's a pic of montanamarine's rig I found in cyberspace:

Re: NF Direct Mount- Who is using them? Reviews?

I had one but converted to a Seekins base and low rings. That got me:

1) a slightly lower scope height (1.83" vs. 2")
2) The ability to add accessories like an angle indicator.

However, the DirectMount's design made it easier to load cartridges so if you don't have detachable mags it's better that way. I also noticed that the machining was very good. There were no marks on the scope when I removed it. Bottom line, if you don't need accessories it's worth considering.

Here is what Nightforce had to say:

Thank you for contacting Nightforce Optics.

Either of these mounts will provide enough strength to hold up to any shoulder fired weapon. The big advantage to the one-piece base, is the mounting space and the availability to mount additional items to the rail, such as the Angle degree indicator. The Direct mount will be slightly lighter than the base and ring combination and the Direct mount will have your objective sitting .125" higher than the base and ring combination. Attached is a personal photo showing a 56mm NXS 3.5x15 mounted with the 1" direct mount.

Re: NF Direct Mount- Who is using them? Reviews?

Something to consider:

Badger 20 MOA ALLOY rail for Rem 700 SA, 2oz. (steel 4.8 oz)

Badger 30mm Low ALLOY 0.823" Height , 3.9oz (steel 7.3 oz.)

So the Nightforce Direct mount would have to be less than 5.9oz to have a weight savings over standard alloy bases and rings.

The NF Direct Mount 1" mount is "the ultimate in a weight-saving one-piece design", except nobody, not even Nightforce, lists the weight?????

I'd weigh it, but I'm too damn lazy to take either of them off, remove scopes, weigh them, then put all of it back together.

That said, they are very light.

Re: NF Direct Mount- Who is using them? Reviews?

eleaf,

I'm sure they are very light, but I'm perplexed as to why NF does not list the weight. But I don't think they could be lighter than say 4 oz. or so. And 1.9 oz is a not a great weight savings in the greater scheme of things. However, if you look at my posting, Alloy compared to Steel badger rings and bases "save" 6.2 oz. Now were talking weight savings.

YMMV and IHMO,

Bob

Re: NF Direct Mount- Who is using them? Reviews?

I just purchased a NF Unimount for my AR-10, which is very similar to the Direct Mount. I have not yet received it but should have it early next week. I'm buying it for the same reasons you mentioned, e.g. fewer parts, it should be stronger, and the rings should be in perfect alignment with all the associated benefits as mentioned by NF:

The Nightforce Unimount is designed to remain on the scope at all times, allowing quick removal of the scope or interfacing with different firearms. It is the most accurate Picatinny Mil. Std. 1913 mount available, incorporating a built-in 20 M.O.A. taper to maximize long-range capability. The Unimount is the ultimate mount for attaching to weapons with an integral Picatinny flat top-type receiver.

Precise tolerances ensure that the riflescope is not subjected to stress, strain or bending as the ring screws are tightened. CNC machined from 7075-T6, the Unimount is finished with a matte black coating.

Re: NF Direct Mount- Who is using them? Reviews?

I went with the Deadnutz mount and put a Falcon Menace 4 x 14 FFP scope on the rifle; everything sits really nicely on the rifle.

Only complaint I have is that I'll have to hack an allen wrench to slip in under the tube to ensure the mount is tight; there's been no wobble (but I mounted with locktite).

Great solution at a superb price.
